Wildcat or Savage Mark ii?

Postby not2worried on Thu Mar 07, 2024 9:36 pm

Looking to pick up a 22 rifle for a gift. Little torn between the Wildcat or the Savage Mark 2. Trying to keep price below $250
Thoughts?

Savage Mark 2 is a fine rifle. Accurate and would make an awesome gift. Love mine.

I have no experience with the wildcat.

Just a note about my previous post about the Savage Mark II.
Originally I was going to ask if the Savage Mark II had the AccuTrigger and then I decided to man-up (person-up) and not be lazy and look it up myself. Well, the Savage Mark II DOES have the AccuTrigger but I was dumb founded when I got to the Savage Arms web site (listed in the above post) and found out there are 23 different versions of the Savage Mark II ranging (this is MSRP) in price from $269 to $729.
I don't own a Savage Mark II but I think Savage makes fine firearms.
Good luck with your choice.

I'm greatly leaning towards the Savage.
Seems like there is good product support and people seem happy with it.
I feel with a bolt action you feel a little more connected to each shot.
Local place can get me the Mark ii G ( wood stock) For $250.00 which feels reasonable.
Walmart does have a non-accutrigger for $160 with synthetic stock. But, rather pay the extra for the better trigger and stock.
So, you guys kinda confirmed what I was already thinking.

IMHO the accutrigger is a must.

Just don't set them too low.
I have an Accutrigger on an F Class rifle.
It seems to be a common issue that when you attempt to adjust the pull down low, it drops the sear.
I don't recall the exact weight at which it started to fail, but it wasn't close to sub 1#
Probably a good set up for many, if not most applications, but not my intended use; too bad because for the money, it, and I believe most Savage rifles offer a great value an high quality.

I had a bizarre experience with Savage. I purchased the Savage 12 FTR model and started working with it, only to run into some difficulty chambering some factory loads, those that did chamber were giving rather spectacular muzzle velocities, averaging in the 3,000 fps range for a 308 Win. Ended up using cerrosafe to cast the chamber and first half inch or so of the rifling. The numbers were off in several areas, but the biggest problem was the freebore. Was expecting it to be .310 for its entire length, instead, it started out at .308 and tapered to .306 where the lands started, but was actually an ellipse in cross section with .308 for the long axis and .306 for the short. Savage wanted the barrel back and in just a few weeks I had a new Savage barrel. Unfortunately, I ran into the same difficulty with getting some factory rounds to chamber and still higher than expected MVs. So I cerrosafed the new chamber. Damn near exactly the same results. I replaced the Savage barrel with a K&P SS that finished at 31" and chambered it with a custom reamer of my design from Dave Martin. Got rid of the barrel nut, as well. Good to go.
