another paper

Postby sochr000 on Tue Feb 24, 2009 7:34 am

So, it's paper writing time again, and I've got a decent start on an allowing conceal on campus paper. So far all I have is, only disarming law abiding citizens, brought up the VT shooting, Utah's laws allowing carry on campus, etc. If anyone has any points I could add, let me know, if not, this probably wont be graded too well, as the teacher is pretty liberal, but whatever.

Well its too bad being Liberal hasn't really done much in the way of preventing school shootings.

Otherwise I'd be on your Professor's side!

I tend to think in economics, so I'm not sure how well that viewpoint works on this. Until people stop enrolling at college for fear of being shot randomly during class, the school's bottom line isn't really affected. To be totally blunt and heartless, its easier for the Dean to issue a public apology than it is to explain why total attendance is half of what it was ten years ago. So until that happens, no reason to change. The $ rules.

The rent-a-cops we had at Iowa State were all but useless. They were damn good at giving out parking tickets though. Never missed an opportunity.

Apparently there haven't been enough tragedies to change any minds, or at least those minds in control positions.

don't just argue against. But argue for with the cases where pro active shooters took action before a threat became a massacre.

Use the Colorado church. There are more but I am on my iPod at the Dr office.

I used the example of the Utah mall shooting where a guy was carrying in the mall, bad guy shoots 9 people before good guy can pin him down.

Also, anyone know who originally said-
"When seconds count police are only minutes away" ? I want to use it in the paper, but don't want to be using random quotes.

IIRC, Utah is a weaker argument than Colorado because the Utah responder was an off duty LEO. SOmething to think about and cross-check before pinning it as an argument for our side.

In Israel there were terrorist attacks on schools until they let teachers carry. None since.

I don't know who said it first either, but it's an easy-to-understand idea that stands on its own merits regardless of its source. I'd use it as that.

First, you can says this without getting into to much of an argument

Guns don't kill people bad people with guns kill people - good people with guns kill bad people with guns, and sometimes even just save lives. Good intentions and hugs and positive feelings do not stop bullets from the bad guys. Self affirmation, chanting, yoga and other nonsnse sure does feel good, but it does not help you or you child when bad people mean to do harm.

I would write the paper from the perspective of a 4th grader in a school under seige... Use sheer autistic kid logic to make your point - it is INFALLABLE believe me.

It is an easy argument to make - but a harder argument to get people to listen to and accept especially when you are talking to a wall of immoveale liberalism - logic is a hard thing to convey.

This is probably already in your paper, sorry if it's a repeat. But so often when I hear when this subject come up, it seems most people have the impression that EVERY student would be carrying and of course all the partying is also brought up! When I mention that they have to pass a background check and be 21yrs old and I'm guessing most kids enter college right out of highschool, so my impression is the actual number of students that would actually be able to legally carry would be quite a bit smaller that the actual enrollment. I usually get a puzzeled "Oh Yeah" !!

When I do my Permit classes, I also mention how we not only have to protect ourselves from some of the 2-legged out there, but also some of the 4-legged-how often do we hear about dog attacks? It amazes me how many people never think of that! I don't know if there are any stats on dog attacks on or around campus but maybe worth a look?

Good Luck!

The shooting at Northern Illinois University was over in 90 seconds. The campus police responded within a minute and a half. As soon as the shooter saw the police, he shot himself.

I think that it would have been a better ending if an armed good guy sped up his demise by a few seconds as in Over in 0.3 of a second...

More generally (credit to the Munchkin Wrangler, mangling and paraphrase is all mine)

Active shooter situations only end one way: When the good guy with the gun arrives on scene. That can be minutes later when the police officer arrives and makes entry or right now in the time of dire need when the permit holder responds to save his life or that of another ...

I know which I prefer, heaven forbid it comes to pass

You should also bring up the scenario that a person doesn't worry 24/7 about their house or school catching on fire, but in reality most homes, and ALL schools have Fire Extinguishers in them. Now, you can use that same scenario as to the purpose people SHOULD be allowed to possess a weapon on campus too! ;)
