Primers are getting ridiculous

Postby 1911fan on Fri Apr 17, 2009 1:26 pm

I sent word out to five guys I know who are all road warriors, all of whom drive for a living and are willing to do things to break the days up. I asked for Small Pistol Primers and large Pistol Primers. I just got an email from the last of the bunch. As far as I can tell, not one gun shop, big box or other outlet in the 5 state area has SPP or LPP for sale. Wisc, UP Mich. N & S Dakota, and Iowa, as well as all of MN that they covered had any. Over one hundred stops this week. I am not going to be able to shoot either at the steel shoot this weekend or at the league I am in, because I am down to what I consider necessary for my own safekeeping. Something has to break.

I got the last small pistol the Wolf's Den had a few days ago. Gunstop had no small or large today.

Last time I checked an auction website like GunBroker, a sleeve of 1000 WSP went for $84.

Before the insanity, you could have found that same 1000 small pistol primer box pretty much anywhere for around $15...

Of the major wholesalers/mail order places, no one had any in until at least the 10 th of May, Grafs, midsouth, Natchez, Midway, Cabela's and WIdeners are all out, and the prices are insane.... $36.00 a K and up, PLUS Haz mat fee.

I just loaded up the last of my small rifle primers. I have 3k on order, but they aren't due until July. :badmood:

Check the gun show this weekend. I picked up 1000 CCI large rifle primers for $30 at State fair show a few weeks ago. The extra few $$ is worth being able to prairie dog hunt this summer. By now all of the dealers will have likely caught on, so the "deals" may be hard to find. :x

Looked at the MWCA show today setting up and the dealers were buying them from each other at 35 to 40.00 a 1000. :(

I'm just in the process of getting started with reloading, and by pure luck the first thing I bought was primers.

So anyway, those of you who've been reloading since they invented brass: has components ever in your memory been this hard to get?

Perhaps some one should start a business, manufacturing primers!

Pat,
Despite what some other people think.....in 94 is was bad for about 8 months...........Bill's back when they had reloading stuff......was raping people at double the going rate. And that was more of imagined shortage rather then a real one. Be patient.....there is powder out there.....and so that is one good thing......and well aside from certain brass cases and lack of premium jacketed bullets there is stuff to reload. And, for you and 38 / 357 the brass lasts a long time, and you can shoot lead....so that helps drop costs.......

It's never been like this in the 37 years that I have been reloading. Can't remember Vietnam ever making a dent of any sort in commercial reloading supplies.
