Help with AKM Builds

Postby DonMn on Tue Jun 16, 2009 5:13 pm

The other day I got an IM on AR15.com from one of the members here about helping folks out doing AK builds and he was wondering if my helping people do builds extended to this forum. I mentioned it on one of my few posts here, sorry I haven't checked in for awhile. But yes, my offer extends to helping you guys here at MNGUNTALK.

I'm not a professional builder and I don't have an FFL, so I can't do builds for people. But I can help people do builds, the builder(owner of parts kit and receiver) will be doing most of the build. Expect to spend the most part of the day doing a build. I provide the place and equipment to do the builds, the builder must provide all supplies needed to do the build. There is a small fee for using my shop and my tools, it isn't free to run a 2 stage air compressor, blast cabinet and a drill press. Excel energy likes to be paid once a month ;). I have head-space gauges for 7.62x39mm only, if you are planning on building a 5.45x39 you need to either provide your own head space gauges or have a gunsmith check out the head spacing when done with your build.

This is the list of supplies the builder needs to supply.

1-AKM parts kit(no virgin kits or kits without original barrel, I've never built off either of those types of kits)
2-Proper ammount of US compliant parts(check either AR15.com or "howtobuildanaktyprifle.com")
3-Drill bits for demilling(see above web sites)
4-Chemicals for parkerizing, if you want your build parkered(calvan.com is the chemicals I'm currently using)
5-100% Nodak-Spud receiver(they are a local company and build the best receivers)
6-Rivets purchased from AK-Builder.com(my tooling is AK-Builder brand, my rivet tool is made for AK-Builders rivets) Othe brands don't squish down as nicely and a lot of times need to be drilled out and redone. Probably the cheapest rivets to purchase $10.00 for a set.
7-One gallon of distilled water(for parking)

Like I mentioned earlier, I charge a small fee for using my shop, tools and power. If you want to off-set the cost of doing a build, you can donate left over supplies. Drill bits, parking chemicals, extra parts from parts kit, AKM parts in general, gun related stuff in general.

You will save a few bucks building your own AKM, plus learing how build you own rifle is a big plus. Don't plan on doing a build and not getting dirty.

I provide the following:

All the proper tooling to build an AKM rifle; all AK-Builder brand, barrel pin and barrel press kit, trigger gaurd rivet jig, rivet tool. 20 ton press, drill press, 2 stage air compressor, blasting cabinet, parkerizing set up. My shop is fairly well set up.

Either drop me an IM on this forum or on AR15.com, I use the same name over there.

I got an IM with someone asking me about building from flats, I'm not set up for building from flats. The way it sits right now I would have to build a few more builds just to pay for the tooling I already have, to build from flats I would need a few more jiggs and a $300 spot welder. With the current prices of AK kits, building from flats(beacause of tooling costs) just isn't cost effective, for me at least.

I'll also explain a little more why I don't like to build from other brands of recievers, aside from NoDak Spuds. I've run into nothing but problems with other brands; sometimes the recievers are too thick to fit in the trunion properly, trunion holes in the completely wrong area, no center supports in recievers, if the reciever it too thick you can also run it problems with the rivets not going far enough in when squish down. I might help you if you have a non-NoDak receiver, but I would have to look at the reciever to see if I would run into issues.

Another thing to keep in mind for doing builds, look at the bottom of your reciver where your trigger goes through. There is one slot on most recievers, you either need to build using a single hook trigger or you have to mod your reciver to fit a double hook trigger. I build using double hooked triggers, I'm lucky my father has a mill so I could modify my recievers.

I'm located in St.Paul, about 5-10 minutes from I-94 & 694.
