Just got word 1/2 hour ago that a local family's 5 yr old boy found the parents' loaded gun...he was killed.

Tragedy. I hope the parents are brought up on charges.

Trust me, 50 years in Angola State Prison would be a vacation compared to what they are going through right now. I was almost at that point (not gun related) about 3 years ago, and it's a nightmare you can't even begin to imagine. I'm sure they are beating themselves to death about not having a gun safe even as we speak.

I don't doubt that in the least. I'd imagine they are virtually suicidal over it.

I still think they should be brought up on charges, if in fact it is due to negligance that could have easily been avoided (like it sounds).

The only remotely positive thing that could possibly come from such a profound tragedy would be a greater awareness for gun safety.

I feel for the parents at their loss...
.................not having a gun safe..................

but, I have to disagree.......
it's the easy answer and a sheep response.....
you need your weapon out and available........
.........................a greater awareness for gun safety.

and this is part of the answer, along with respect, responsibility, and accountability...............
not locking down the world...............

Cant you see we must be free

I have a biometric safe next to my bed. the only prints it will open for are me and the wifey. It was expensive but it is a lot cheaper than a lawyer and a funeral.
I feel for the parents but some people need more training. Just my .02

Where can I get one of those safes and how expensive are they?

+ 1

I think that there are a number of responsible ways to store your firearm so it is not accessible to a small child but can still be available to you if needed.

If the kid fell on steak knife, would we charge the parents? If the kid was taking a bath and dropped the hair dryer in the tub, would we charge the parents? If the kid pulled down the 52" plasma off the wall and got squished would we charge the parents?

Bummer for the whole family, but the kids time was up. He is in a better place now.

Maybe, maybe not, but steak knives are intended for cutting meat, not shooting people. Even so, they are dangerous, and good parents keep these things out of the hands of 5 year olds.

Maybe, maybe not, but dryers are intended to dry hair, not shoot people. Even so they are dangerous, and good parents would not keep a dryer within reach or accessible to a five year old when he is taking a bath, if they let the child bathe unattended at all.

Maybe, maybe not, but Televisions are designed for entertainment, not for shooting people. Even so, they are dangerous, and good parents would have it securely fastened to a stud in the wall with the enclosed bracket specifically designed for the purpose, so it doesn't kill their 5 year old

Whole heartedly agree... but the firearm should have been inaccessible to the child. Period. Make no mistake, I feel terrible for the parents, I can't imagine what they are putting themselves through.

They should face criminal charges. This could have very easily been avoided.
