Might sound like a stupid question, but...

What makes a knife automatic? And don't go "durr a spring" until you've tracked with me a bit.

Is it if the knife is opened by a spring using a button?

Is it if the knife has a spring at all?

What about if you have to push the blade to get it going, but the spring finishes pushing the blade out?

What about knives you can "flick" out?

... the statute does not provide a definition for the term "switch blade knife opening automatically", at least as far as I can find.

Thoughts?

Hello sounds like I you are also not experts - nice to see one more of us in the world :D

Ok this is what I “think” :?:

Automatic: will open a blade by depressing or sliding a button that activates a mechanism
to release and open the blade.

Spring Assist: will open a blade by pressing on or pushing on a “Part of the Blade”, once pressure
is applied to the blade a spring or mechanism will assist in the deployment or opening of the blade.

In a nut shell (again I only “think”) if you use the blade to open it then, it’s an Assist.
Now if you use a button or mechanism other than the blade it’s an Automatic,
switch blade or a Stiletto (AKA OTF - out the front) knife.

I hope this helps
Again only what I think
