MN STATUTE 609.66

609.66 DANGEROUS WEAPONS.
Subdivision 1.Misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor crimes.(a) Whoever does any of the following is guilty of a crime and may be sentenced as provided in paragraph (b):

(1) recklessly handles or uses a gun or other dangerous weapon or explosive so as to endanger the safety of another; or

(2) intentionally points a gun of any kind, capable of injuring or killing a human being and whether loaded or unloaded, at or toward another; or

(3) manufactures or sells for any unlawful purpose any weapon known as a slungshot or sand club; or

(4) manufactures, transfers, or possesses metal knuckles or a switch blade knife opening automatically; or

You may not carry (or technically, use). You may collect. Sale and purchase is legal, for collecting purposes only.

ETA - Nowhere in MN law does it define a collector...hence why sales are legal. Go to any gun show, talk to the dealers. Many will "remind you" that you have to be a collector to buy one. Just say you know, you are, and you're good.

IDIOTIC law. Did you know that the Department of Justice opposed Congress' effort to ban them in 1958? Or that West Side Story was cited on the floor of Congress to prove why they must be banned?

If I didn't know that I'd be tempted as heck to carry it, I'd be all over this.

No, Dean, it's EVIDENCE! And in order to ensure chain of custody, I must keep it with me at all times.

Just to be sure, "collecting" automatic knives is an interesting work-around the letter of the law. If you're caught with part of your collection clipped to your pocket, you're likely screwed.

I agree 100% that carrying one around is illegal, & if you look at my posts on this forum you will see I have stated this in the past

However owning one & carrying one around are two different things.

The law on automatic knives has always baffled me, you can carry a gun but you can't carry an automatic blade. This falls right in with the can b.s. viewtopic.php?f=52&t=19221and so many other far fetched laws that this state has on its books.

A lot of LEO's I know carry automatic knives when they're working. I assume some also carry them when they aren't.

Funny thing, other than the statute that says it's OK for LEO's to possess one in a school, I can't find where the law allows a general LEO exemption.

In other words, where in MN statutes does it say that LEO's can carry automatic knives?

When I was in the knife business, I would only ship to military or law enforcement with a Form 18 request per 18 USC 1716 (g)(2)(1-4).

LEOs in this state are actually not supposed to carry automatic knives unless issued by their department. Most do anyway, of course, because nobody is going to arrest them for it.
