iPad edition of Concealed Carry & Home Defense Fundamentals

Postby Michael Martin on Wed May 23, 2012 8:42 am

Hi all,

I wanted to share some exciting news - yesterday we went live with an interactive iPad edition of "Concealed Carry and Home Defense Fundamentals," which contains all of the content from the print edition, plus more than 25 videos, and 40 interactive "widgets" that allow readers to interactively explore topics, such as how sight alignment works. The book also contains interactive quizzes, and hundreds of high resolution photos and photos galleries. And of course, being an Apple iBook, navigating from chapter to chapter, and page to page is extremely intuitive. If you'd like to take a look but you're not ready to take the $12.99 plunge, you can download a sample of the book.

As always, thanks to David, my editor in chief; and Marc Berris, who joined me at the studio to record several fantastic videos that really make the legal sections pop.

You can link to the book in iTunes here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/conceal ... mt=11&ls=1

Well, maybe someday, but it wouldn't be next on the priority list. Apple being Apple, has set the bar pretty high with what you can do with these interactive books, but of course, they don't include an ability to export to anyone else's format. So, each platform requires its own development cycle. I'd like to think that Kindle will play catch-up with Apple sometime soon, but so far, they aren't able to support the interaction that I was able to include in this Apple iBook.

If someone purchases and is willing, it would be nice to see a review done and posted on this forum.

Downloaded a copy last night. Got to read the introduction and that is about it. The video that was shot was done really really well. I'm guessing that they either shot the video on a really high end SLR cam or used a RED cam for the source footage. The ability to link outside the iBook app is nice. To be brutally honest having to leave the app to go to YouTube and watch the video is a little weird. It would be nice if those videos were embedded. That has more to do with the outside content creators and what they are willing to allow I believe though. The ability to zoom in on the little inset "Factoid" boxes on pages makes it a lot easier to read. Tonight I should be able to get more into the book and say more

Guys, thanks for purchasing the book and posting the comments! BBeckwith, there should be only two videos in the book that launch YouTube: the first is the NRA video discussing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the second is a video of Jerry Miculek setting a few world records. All of the other videos are embedded - those videos can either be run within the page, or you can "pinch" them open to run full screen. You're also correct about the videos that we shot for the introduction, and the other videos of Marc and me. They were shot with an high-end HD video camera at a great studio in Bloomington. The credit for the completed videos has to go to Scott Jenson of Dream Reel Productions.

Thanks for doing this. I was just considering buying the book when I saw this post. I downloaded it last night and read it the entire thing. One thing to note--it is a large book and took a while to completely download before I could read it. Overall, it was very polished and informative.
If you are reading this, there is a better than average chance that you are a d-bag.
