MidwayUSA Competition Range Bag

Postby GunGoogler on Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:52 pm

Hey folks,

I bought a new MidwayUSA Competition Range Bag last week to replace the duffle bag I was abusing as a range bag. I had read some reviews and such before deciding and ultimately, the MIdway won because it was on sale for $45. I got it yesterday and I am surprised and impressed with the size, capability, and quality of the materials. I figured I'd take a few pictures and post a review for your folks in case anyone was considering a new range bag themselves.

I chose the olive drab instead of the black color for two reasons: (1) I have a ton of black stuff already and wanted something different and (2) small items easily get lost to my eyes in a large black bag. I thought that things would stand out more easily against the green. I will say, as the pictures show, the bag is less green than I had thought it would be, which I am quite satisfied with.

On to some photos:
_DSC0205.JPG
Here is the front of the bag. As you can see there are two zippered pockets on the front that are about 7x9x2.5 inches.

_DSC0200.JPG
Inside of the right-hand pocket--same as the left. I put some folding cans in so that you can get perspective.

_DSC0206.JPG
This is the back of the bag. There is a zippered compartment that runs the length of the bag and extends out nearly three inches.

_DSC0210.JPG
Inside of that zippered compartment. I liked the built-in magazine holders. As you can see, there are 8 of them and they hold a variety of magazine types. I can fit two loaded 1911 magazines in each of the pockets, two P22 magazines, or a Glock magazine. That should give you a good indication of overall capacity. There are also more elastic straps on the front, inside flap for storage and there is a compartment that could hold papers and such behind the magazine holders that runs the length of the pocket.

_DSC0211.JPG
Here is the pocket behind the magazines.

_DSC0207.JPG
Overall view of the back side with the magazine pouch open, for perspective.

_DSC0212.JPG
Here is the top. You can see the double-zippered flap that opens to the inside compartment.

_DSC0199.JPG
One thing I really liked was that the shoulderstraps are secured by strong stitching and metal d-rings and connectors, rather than the plastic I've seen on a lot of bags. This was a nice touch, which is useful considering how much isht I've put in this bag.

_DSC0213.JPG
This is the top with the top flap open. Inside is a large compartment with a removable ammo/stage bag inside as well as a compartment on each side that hold two removable, zippered and padded pistol bags.

This is the inside of the left pocket. You can see the elastic on the inside where things like flashlights or other small devices can be mounted to the bag.
If you are reading this, there is a better than average chance that you are a d-bag.

Continued...

_DSC0214.JPG
This shows the ammo/stage bag removed. This was a nice touch. The bag itself holds a bunch of ammo--as you can see, and includes two configurable dividers as well as six more magazine holders (three on each inside end, same size as the others) and a mesh-bottomed, cinch-top brass collector

_DSC0219.JPG
This is one of the pistol bags that I mentioned with my 21st Century Commander laid on top, for perspective. There are two of these that tuck inside the bag.

_DSC0218.JPG
For example, this is where the pistol bag tucks in. Same on the other side of the compartment.

_DSC0202.JPG
Back to the outside: This is left-side end of the bag. As you can see, there is one large pocket with a laminate spot for a tag or ID.

_DSC0203.JPG
This is the inside of that end pocket with another pair of cans and some range glasses, for perspective.

_DSC0204.JPG
This is the other end of the bag. There is a pouch that could hold a large water bottle or other items openly as well as another zippered pouch that is about half the size of the pocket on the opposite end.

There you have it! Overall, I love the bag and can't believe how inexpensive it is. If you are in need of a new range bag--consider the Midway. It is well-made and clearly large.

Once I posted, I noticed that the inline photos look a little odd; however, if you click on the photo for the larger version, you'll see it normally. Sorry about that! Hopefully it doesn't detract from the review.

Also, if you look closely at the removable ammo/stage bag, you'll see zippers that run the length of the bag on either side--you know, even MORE pockets. I haven't seen this many pockets since my parachute pants back in junior high. That's right. What!?

Looks very respectable. I already have a "range bag" in the form of an old, large backpack but this could serve well as a BOB or for camping, etc. I'll have to propose it to the wife, who sometimes tires of my need/ desire for guns/ knives/ survival equipment, etc.

:)

I have a Midway "pro" competition shooting mat that I snagged about two years ago, and I love that. It was on sale, too! Take that, wifey!

My brother bought me this bag as a gift some time back and I have been using it as a range bag. I also enjoy it but my only complaint is if you get enough weight in the bag, the shoulder strap adjusting rings don't hold their position and tend to slide all the way down. Good review though.

I definitely think it could serve as a BOB--it's the perfect size and plenty of separated compartments, which is nice when you are living out of a bag. I've done it for over three months and I can attest to the joys of organization. For the price ($45) you can't really get mad at it. I think it is normally $60 or 70, but seems to go on sale on any day ending in a 'y'.

A few months back these were $34.99. I picked one up for me and another for my father. I really like it but I have one complaint. This thing is just so dang big I find myself loading it up with way to much ammo......

Thanks for the review and pics!!!!! I've been wanting a range bag for a great price but the online photos never do them justice. After reading this thread last night I ordered the exact one but in black.

Nice price. I do see how that could be an issue; however, I was already doing that with a duffel bag that couldn't adequately handle it. Wait...did you say too much ammo? I don't understand what that means. :gun:

That's along the same lines as too much fun or too much money. There's no such thing.
