Salesman named Chad at Alexandria Wally World

I was traveling through Alexandria, MN and stopped by Walmart to see if they had any .22lr. They did have some Winchester 333 boxes. I only wanted one and when Chad rang me up he asked if I was buying them for a handgun. I told him it didn't matter, or does it? Anyone else have a similar experience?

If it's for a handgun, you must be 21, 18 for a rifle.

Why did he feel he needed to ask someone like me who is way past both those ages?

The cash register probably told him too. If you ask everybody you won't miss the one person who looks 21 but is only 19.

Crude but effective way to avoid getting caught in some bogus BATFE sting.

They have to answer the question for each and every box of ammo they ring up. So, if you are lucky enough to come across say ten boxes, it will be ten minutes later you will be able to leave with them ;)

If you had Sam instead of Chad it would have been way different.

I might not look nearly 40, but I'm certainly over 21: I get asked my DOB for spray paint at wally world. It's their protocol, and they get chewed if they don't follow it. Nothing personal.

As was already mentioned, you have to be 21 to buy handgun ammo. As MORONIC as that is, because you don't have to be 21 to own, or even purchase a handgun in MN (from an educated private seller anyway).

Yep, I'm pretty sure the cashier has to punch a key saying thy made any needed age verification checks. And that Wally World likely has a crew of traveling security 'shoppers' who's job it is to catch non-compliant and thieving employees, there're afraid of losing their job if they fail to follow procedure.

They have to punch in some numbers that resemble a date of birth.

There are no "secret shoppers" That would be something that their loss prevention team would deal with in regards to policy enforcement.

The whole process is automated and there is no report that gets printed out that is verified or anything.

It's more of a feel good measure than anything.

This has happened at all the Wal-Marts I've been to, even those the clerk knows me by name. As mentioned it's their policy. You will find the same at Fleet Farm where they actually ask for your ID and punch in the date of birth as verification.

An even better story- a friend started as a police officer back before one needed a degree to get their licensing. For 2 years someone had to buy him his ammo (as well as duty revolver) as he wasn't 21 years old. Imagine, being charged with enforcing the law but not being able to legally buy some of the equipment needed to do the job.

I wonder if one would be asked the same question buying 410 ammo since it can be shot from a judge.

I am getting closer to 40 and they ask me this question. I guess I am not absorbing enough gunpowder through my pores.
