If you remove the dimples can you take the extended mag tube off and run it in the original configuration?

Dont' see why not. I'm not sure what they actually do.

Yes, just have to catch the spring when you take the cap off.
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Here's a fun followup question:

How does one re-dimple the magazine tube? My 870 26" barrel (I got rid of the 20") has no ball-detent to lock the cap and requires the use of the locking cap and retainer.

One buys another 870 26" barrel! They have a bucket full of them at Metro Pawn. :)

Its a crap shoot -- but I've seen 26" vent ribs, 18's and 20's the last few times I've gone in.

My prize find was a 20" smoothbore wingmaster barrel (deep-blued rather than parked) with rifle sights and Remchoke in near pristine shape I got out the door for $85! Its on the Zombie gun now (which isn't the one I have listed).

I would except for two problems:

1) I won't be moving back to Minnesota for another 6-12 months

2) I haven't seen a 3.5" barrel with the ball detent

Oh, you didn't say 3.5"....may God have mercy on your soul.

Brownells sells a ball detent "re-do'er" kit...

I'm not a big glutton for punishment, so I have rarely shot it w/ the 3.5" shells.

Thanks for the Brownells tip!

What does the ball detent on the barrel ring have to do with the mag tube dimples?

The mag tube dimples are for the magazine spring retainer which ratchets into the locking cap. When one alters or removed the dimples, the ball detent on the barrel are essential to keep the locking cap in place.

In the instance of my 870 Super Mag, I removed the mag dimples for a mag extension with a shorter barrel (which has the ball detent). Now that I have sold the extension and shorter barrel, I'd like to get back to the original mag tube dimple configuration. My 870's barrel does not have the ball detent to lock the mag cap in place.
