It shoots a bit to the right

Postby tman on Sun Jul 25, 2010 3:15 pm

A couple of years a go, I was digging throught a gun locker at a local PD and found this:

One of the former chiefs (and this 2-3 man dept) has a lot of "former's" since they go on to better paying gigs) had found a surplus program from Uncle Sam. He received 2 1911's on a permanent loan for shipping costs of $35.

This one and the other were kept as squad backups for years. This one was essentially abandoned, forgotten in the trunk of one of the cars by an officer. It was eventually found, and then stored without any attention in the gun locker for a couple more years, til I came across it. It was dirty from firing, pitted and in somewhat sorry shape. With the current chief's permission I recently took it to a local smith, who cleaned and refurbed it.

I finally got a chance to take it out for a test-drive. On the third round, the extractor tore through the rim of the case and the empty wouldn't eject. It was like a ring of brass along the edge of the rim separated. That was the ONLY failure of about 175 rounds.

The slide is Remington-Rand:

The frame appears to be Springfield Armory and has as 1978 stamp on it that I assume was the last time it was serviced...

The trigger was surprisingly good. The fit of the slide is a little loose, but I'm not complaining.

There IS this ding on the rear sight, which is annoying, but only cosmetic. The rear notch is centered (the line on the slide matches up with the line on the rear sight).

Other than the POA/POI problem, I am bitten by this war relic. I like to imagine that it saw service in WWII and again in Korea and Viet Nam, but who knows. If anyone can tell from the markings on the frame of this Frankenstein a little of its history, I'm all ears.

Yes, I'd like to figure out a way keep it, but NO I can't. Uncle Sam keeps records and has a guy who calls regularly to check up on the two pistols, along with a mil-surp M-14 (converted to semi-auto only) and an M-16-A1 (currently still in use by the dept).

Enjoy the pics! and thanks for letting me share

TMAN, the slide is Remington, the recevier is a 1944 Colt (based on serial number and the GHD acceptance marking on the left just behind the trigger); so technicaly it is a Colt pistol that happens to have a Remington slide on it. Based on the markings, the pistol is an army arsonal rebuild done in 1978.

Yep. Someone figrued that out for me on http://www.1911forum.com. The second pistol that the PD got was a Rem Rand frame with a Colt slide. I've been told that they've never both been field stripped at the same time, but I have my doubts. It WOULD explain a lot...

The 1911 hasn't changed much over the years. Mine was made in 1918 and looks very similar except for the hump on the backstrap.

Nice pistol!

The other major changes from the 1911 to the 1911A-1 were a shorter trigger and cut-outs just behind the trigger guard on the grip.

Where'd you get that one?

The ANAD 6 78 markings are from a rebuild at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama, June 1978

Not that it matters for shooting, but have you looked at the barrel, grip panels and magazine to see if they are original to the gun?

The magazine might be original. It's "s" stamped. The barrel is NOT. and I didn't take the grips off, but they're correct to the period (reinforced where the screws go in).

I'm also DONE shooting it, I think. I bought a 1911 for myself and #1 Son is getting one for HS graduation... I've got my eye on another for carry....

I bought it at a local gun show about 4 years ago. As a collector of military weapons, I wanted a WW1 Colt 1911 because it preludes my true love.......the M1 carbine. M1 carbines replaced the 1911 for carry by military officers. I currently have 7 carbines, but only one Colt 1911. The Colt pictured below is actually a Colt 1903 (.32 caliber). I have a few old Colt pocket pistols.

This might be a bit OT, but here's a little original Colt 1908 that I bought my wife for our anniversary a few years ago. This one was made in 1922 and appears to have never been fired. I also have a blued one exactly like it pictured right below it.
