Remington 870 Magazine Tube Dimple Removal

Postby Paul on Tue Jul 05, 2011 11:45 am

Recently I had a few Remington 870 shotguns that I wanted to put magazine extensions on. Two of them had the dimples at the end of the magazine tube, which as you know need to be removed prior to installing an extension so the follower can travel past that point. I looked at the different methods/options that were out there. The two most common methods are to drill out the dimples or file them down, but I wasn't too excited to start drilling into the gun.

I happened to come across this Brownell's product while surfing YouTube.

After watching the video, I decided to order it and give it a try. With a discount, it cost me about $50.

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=2527 ... ENT_RAISER

After using it on both of the guns, I can say it works, but not quite as smoothly as on the video. I know, big surprise. Basically, once you pound the tool in as shown, it does push out the dimples about 90% of the way - Which I later found out does not allow the follower to move past that point with the barrel on.

Anyway, at this point the tool is more or less stuck in the barrel. In order to finish the project - and free up the tool, I had to use a brass hammer on tap on/around the dimple slightly. That raised the dimple up the rest of the way, and took the pressure off of the tool so it could slide freely in and out. If you don't tap out the dimples, your only option for removing the tool is to pound it out using a couple of the notches on the handle of tool.

The brass hammer did not leave any lasting or permanent marks on the finish of the gun. But that portion would have been covered up by the barrel ring anyway. The total project time, start to finish is about 10 minutes.

Many won't be interested in the tool, given the price, but if you have multiple guns to do, it's worth the money.

How did you get a $50 discount? Nice tool, and you could probably make it yourself with a bit of bar-stock and a lathe.

It's called a drimel. Get one!

If you have a half inch drive socket set, one of them usually does the same chore

I didn't get a $50 discount, it was $50 after the discount, normally around $75. Brownell's offers different pricing plans for various groups, military, law enforcement and so on.

You're right... One could probably make this with bar-stock and a lathe... But I don't have a lathe, nor the desire to try to make something that can be easily obtained from a retailer for a reasonable fee. ;)

Well, no... It's actually called a dremel.

How is a dremel not a special tool? It does something that I couldn't do with fingers alone.

Well I didn't think about that option and you clearly failed to suggest it... But if I just used a socket set, I wouldn't be able to post online about my new tool!

My purchase of a magazine extension is what led to the purchase of a Dremel. :)

I bought the dremel to keep the dog's toenails trim. Finally got to use it for doing something else.

I went through all of my sockets and couldn't find one that would work, so I decided to dremel the dimples off.

Don't make the mistake that I did and leave any part of the dimple. If you feel any kind of bump...keep grinding.

Why are the "use the search" guys usually the same as the "way to bump an old thread" guys?
