AR500- Laser vs. Plasma cut

Postby Scratch on Mon Apr 20, 2015 11:21 am

I hear a lot about how dangerous steel targets that are cut with CNC plasma are, versus laser cut targets. So I got one of each and did an informal test on them.

Here's a video in case you were wondering too.

I still have them both and will keep testing them together...

Nice post!

The thing is with prolonged use with the plasma cut ones. You are going to see premature cracking and breakage on the plasma cut ones opposed to the laser cut ones. Especially around mounting holes. As far as edge hits go. If you hit right on the edge, and I mean right on the edge, they will be pretty similar looking with the little "chips" taken out of them.

Any idea how many impacts it'll take before I start to see cracks on it? And which caliber will do more damage...?

Very cool. I look forward to your findings. I have just recently made s bunch of various sizes from 4-16 inch AR500 targets 3/8 thick. So far they are holding up well to several hundred .308, 5.56 / .223 rounds in the 200-500 yd range. I actuall made some out of 1/2" HRS that I use on my pistol range, all rigid mounted but at about a 15 deg downward angle. Only round to do ANY damage so far is 44 mag.

I made these a couple years ago I think... They're holding up great too.

I'm going to mount those two "test subjects" next to each other on a special base, in an area that they can get shot at often, with as many calibers as possible, to see how they hold up in comparison. If I notice any damage on either, I'll make sure to post up.
