Mossberg Patriot Bolt Action Rifle

Postby yuppiejr on Sun Aug 30, 2015 10:49 am

The value priced bolt action rifle market isn't exactly hurting for new options, however Mossberg has thrown their hat back in the ring after a shaky start with the 4x4 and ATR platforms and rolled out the new Patriot line. They've really thrown down the gauntlet as far as what can be delivered in a value priced hunting rifle for less than $400...

Here's the Mossberg Patriot with the walnut stock upgrade ($360-$400 street):

For comparison, here's the classic Winchester model 70:

Instead of regurgitating the various professional reviews I'll link those for your benefit and then note what I've observed that hasn't shown up in those reviews.

The walnut stock really makes the rifle stand out in this price segment... it's not heirloom/show quality figuring, but it's a much nicer fit and finished stock than I expected in a rifle that costs less than $800. The actual street price for the Patriot is usually $360-$400 for walnut and $300-$350 for polymer stocked guns without scopes. The rifles with walnut stocks are hard to find right now, Mossberg does sell both the walnut and gray laminate stocks separately if you can't find the walnut version in stock, $105 plus shipping for either (you could presumably sell the poly stock to make it a wash in out of pocket cost). Magazines are the same model used in the original 4x4 rifle and cost $28 each direct from Mossberg plus shipping. There are also youth models with adjustable length of pull stock inserts and scope package kits that include Vortex Crossfire II scope + rings.

The rifle has an adjustable trigger, pillar bedded walnut or polymer stock, fluted 22" (20" on youth models) parkerized + fluted barrel, fluted bolt with extended textured knob, 2 position safety, detachable magazines (compatible with the 4x4 mags which run less than $30 a pop) and a basic 2-piece aluminum scope base set. Note that the scope base screw hole spacing on the receiver matches the Remington 700 long-action, and per my scope ring alignment kit also matches in height so pretty much any Rem 700 LA base will work with this rifle.

I presently have one of the polymer stocked models chambered in 30-06 topped with a Burris Fullfield II 2-7 scope and will be running it to the range next week to get some real-world trigger time with the platform. The bolt unlocks and travels more smoothly than the other value priced rifles I compared it with (Savage Axis II, Ruger American, Remington 793). The rifle feels/fits better than the Ruger American rifle and I much prefer the heft, ergonomics, fit and balance of the Mossberg to any of the other choices. It's not as skinny/anemic feeling as the Ruger but has a nicer shape and balance than the Remington or Savage in their tupperware stocks. The trigger is nice, equal to the Ruger, better than the Remington but not quite a Savage Accutrigger. The magazine is all plastic beside the spring and has a tendency to "twang" when empty, though it locks positively in place and I've noticed no issues with feed or function so far, I prefer the steel box and latch system of the Savage magazine system.

A range report indicating performance shooting a few typical budget ammo types ($15-$25 a box range) coming soon.
