Buying guns after fired? Watch out for the SWAT team!

....................................................................................................................................................

Concerns about an Oregon Department of Transportation employee who purchased several guns after being placed on leave prompted law enforcement across Southern Oregon to step in.

Negotiators and a SWAT team from Medford police safely took a man — whose name wasn't released — into protective custody Monday morning in the 500 block of Effie Street, Medford police said in a news release.

He was taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center for a mental-health evaluation.

The man recently had been placed on administrative leave from his job and was "very disgruntled," the news release said.

ODOT Communications Director Patrick Cooney said there were administrative, personnel matters involved that limited what the department could discuss.

However, the state agency had reported concerns about the man to law enforcement agencies, who started monitoring him, officials said.

"We had concerning information regarding a personnel issue and were watching the subject," Jackson County Sheriff Mike Winters said.

In two days, the man bought a Heckler & Koch .45-caliber universal self-loading handgun, a Walther .380-caliber handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said. All of those firearms were purchased legally, with required record checks by the Oregon State Police.

Authorities were "extremely concerned" that the man may have been planning to retaliate against his employers, the news release said.

"Instead of being reactive, we took a proactive approach," OSP Sgt. Jeff Proulx said.

Douglas and Jackson County sheriff's departments, OSP officers based in both counties and police in Medford and Roseburg collaborated, he said.

Medford police watched the man's home overnight, starting at about 9 p.m. Sunday, Hansen said.

Because he was known to have weapons, police wanted to defuse the situation and ensure the man wasn't a danger to himself or others before the neighborhood awakened and people started their daily activities, Hansen said.

Medford's hostage negotiators and SWAT team were called in at 3 a.m. Monday and arrived on the scene at about 5:45 a.m., he said.

About a dozen officers responded. They closed the street for about an hour and evacuated three homes to protect neighbors and prevent bystanders from gathering, he said.

After a phone conversation with negotiators, the man — who was alone in the home — agreed to come out, Hansen said.

Police seized the recently purchased firearms, as well as another .45-caliber Heckler & Koch handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun. Police are holding the weapons for safekeeping, but no criminal charges have been filed.

Sounds like someone won't have to worry about working after their lawsuit goes through.

That news article is ridiculous

Of course, we know enough to make a definitive call on this case. NOT!

" was "very disgruntled," " Could mean he has made death threats to people. Also, if he is adjudicated mentally dangerous, that would be cause in MN to take away his guns.

It could also mean he was simply upset to be let go, as most people would be.

Unfortunately this article decided to focus on the fact that he was a gun owner, rather than go into details about the situation.

Pretty loose with terms here...What is very disgruntled? I'm thinking if he made threats they would of said that.
Could be interesting how this plays out. Is it a new tool to their arsenal.

If he made death threats, as someone suggested, he would be charged with something. According to the article, however, he was not.

I like the comment here about this guy not having to worry about his work after the law suit.

I've been laid off once.... I would have called my myself very disgruntled.

disgruntled:
"displeased and discontented; sulky; peevish"

In fact I don't think I've ever seen anyone let go... and not be "displeased, and discontent"

I wonder what the real story is here.

You have to take legal action BEFORE you strip away rights. Doing it the other way around is crap.

If there were death threats, then take action on said threats, and the guy doesn't pass the background checks. If he was just less than happy he was let go, then leave him the hell alone.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

No charges means the LEO's have crossed the line.

With no more than the article says, who can say the guy wasn't just going to spend some time target shooting? Had time on his hands after he got let go, maybe some extra money with a severance package too. I know what I want to buy when I have extra cash burning a hole in my pocket...

The keyboard quarterback in me says this guy is getting the shaft. But, I'm going to pull a DeanC on this one, overall.

If you have to wait for things to pan out it means the police are wrong. Our friends with a legal monopoly on force have a duty to be beyond reproach.

True. If we can assume the article shares the whole entire situation. Then I stick by my first sentence in that post.

If they have reason to hold the firearms, they better damn well know what they're charging the guy with. This "detain person/property without reason" stuff kind of stinks. If they're suspicious of death threats or something, charge the guy with intent to commit murder (or whatever the legal terminology is). Not really sure if thats even a charge. Hard to prove somebody was going to carry out a crime, before they ever got close to doing it.

Me thinks the article is missing some key info though.

Keep in mind that this was written by the same media mensa candidates that are factually incorrect in so many instances when writing about guns. An AK-47 here, an M-16 there, when, in fact, it was an AR-15 and an SAR-1. The difference between them might just be a tiny little happy-switch, but it's a big difference.

Unfortunately, we know too little to make an INFORMED opinion.

A lot of the comments on the related articles are from people living in the same county in Oregon that this event transpired......... They call it a "Police State" and say that the local police force rules with a rather JackBooted - Big Brotheresque attitude towards things.
If you're reading this, there are better than even odds you are a d-bag.
