Woodbury police officer shot during domestic call
By JIM ANDERSON, Star Tribune

A Woodbury police officer apparently was shot and wounded late Thursday responding to a domestic dispute, neighbors said.

Few details were available early Friday as to what happened at a house on Braemar Lane, but the two neighbors said they heard gunshots about 11:30 p.m.

"There were at least a few rounds. Then there was a break, then there were a few more rounds," said Andrew Ream, estimating that at least a dozen shots were fired.

Ream said he understood that police had responded to a domestic dispute and that an officer was shot and taken away in an ambulance.

Later, at about 12:45 a.m., a body was taken out of the house to a hearse.

Mandy Ream said she called 911 and was told to lock her doors.

"It's a safe neighborhood," she said, adding that she didn't know the people in the house. "It's the first time that anything like this has happened."

Officer-down calls are exceedingly rare. In the most recent in the Twin Cities, North St. Paul officer Richard Crittenden, 57, was shot to death on Labor Day 2009 while responding to a domestic disturbance.

A Maplewood officer responding with him was wounded and the suspect they had confronted, Devon Dockery, was shot to death in the exchange of gunfire.

Devon Dockery, was shot to death in the exchange of gunfire.

At least there's some silver lining to this. The cop's condition was said to be improving this morning on the news.

People need to rethink their idea of what the word "safe" actually means...

It was a safe neighborhood, is more accurate.

It is a crazy world we live in. Here's hope that the officer makes a full recovery. I'm not a police officer, but of those I've talked to and what I've seen on the ever-informative-and-always-100%-accurate devise we call a television, domestic disputes are among the most dangerous things to deal with on the job. Lots of senseless death and injury results from responding to domestic calls. My uncle is a cop and I know quite a few, and getting a call for a domestic always seems to be a real drag for them.
