Probably just mis-speak by the reporter, but she said they took him back through, which seemed odd.

THIS is exactly why you "gun proof" your kids by training they what guns can do. This kid quite probably saved both their lives and perhaps saved his sister other horrors.

Yes. With the proper training the kid would've at least waited until the guy was in the house with at least one foot on the ground, as scary as that is. But then, as someone pointed out, this is Texas, so I digress.

So the kid could positively identify him?

"Yes Sir, Officer. Those are my bullet holes." or "I distinctly remember that skidmark he made in his shorts upon his exiting the house."

A friend of mine and I were discussing child access to firearms the other day - so I sent her this article. I thought our dialogue might prove illustrative.

"Jesus. I hope they throw that deputy in jail! what a horrible cop, breaking the law like that! "

When I asked what laws he broke, she replied:

"1. leaving a loaded gun where kids could get it, when he wasn't even home.
2. Teaching a 15 year old how to shoot.
if you aren't old enough to handle the responsibility of driving, you certainly aren't old enough to handle the responsibility of a deadly weapon. "

Yes folks, that's the mentality of the individuals we are up against.

Wrong. I would expect a Voice of Reason to have better profiling skills than you do. Even a self-proclaimed one.

Yeah, cause it would have been much better and safer for his kids had they just stood there and let the multiple assailants do whatever they wanted. you know, tape them up, assault and violate them, possibly kill them in their own home...

Nice to see the priorities.

I'm wrong?

Who's the one that thinks a person should have to wait to defend themselves until somebody has set a foot inside their house? Are attackers unable to harm you from outside the confines of the building? Have they not made an attempt to get inside and for all you know, kill you once they are inside? An attempt to open both front and back doors, and a broken window indicate to me they were doing their best to force entry. A broken window is just as good as an open door, or a hole in the wall to me personally.

Why as the victim must you wait for something as stupid as "set one foot inside the home"? Guns shoot through doors and windows last I heard. Whatever you think is legal should not be your first priority in my opinion.

Priorities to EJSG19:
1. Family survival - just my opinion, as its the top priority on my conscience. If all else is in my control, this is what I'd take first.
2. Personal survival - yes you must be alive to protect your family, but I'd rather die trying to save them, than them die because I saved myself.
3. Legal and financial consequences - these don't make a hill of beans if either your family or you are dead.

Not to say there are only those 3 things to worry about, but seriously, if you are afraid for your life should a person be required to act one way if an attacker is outside some arbitrary boundary or inside it? My brand of common sense says "screw that", you're trying to get at me to hurt me. All bets are then off.

So you, being "correct" vikesfan1, are entitled to your opinion. However I think there is correct, and then at the polar opposite end of the spectrum, there is you and your opinion. Thats as nice as I can put it.
