Actually, the surrepticious slow draw might work in this situation. The quick draw stand, challenge, shoot is gonna get you killed.
but as soon as he looks away... slip it out, wait for him to look away again

So long as those around you don't see you preparing and start doing furtive glances back and forth between you and him drawing attention to you.

I saw the original program on TV. The student with the gun was always in the same seat in the center and other than the instructor was the only one shot. I wondered what would have happened if the student would have traded seats with someone else.

Would you shoot at the desktop in front of where someone was sitting if you wanted to miss them? He was lackadaisically firing with one hand in his pocket, and didn't start moving until he got tagged in the leg. In which case he unloaded a few rounds at the closest person next to him as he turned/fell in confronting the security guard.

No doubt in my mind he was trying to kill those folks. He just failed at it like he failed at life...

You guys are slamming the ABC News video here, but did anybody get the fact that they were trying to convey that if you own a gun or carry a gun for protection that you need practice and it's not like the movies or a video game. The point behind the classroom scenario was to prove that even experienced shooters will fail when the adrenaline flows and the tunnel vision kicks in. I thought the video was very well done in proving that we all need continual practice and not just standing at the gun range.

Listen to the tone they have about permit carriers, and the lengths they go through to discredit the effectiveness of lawful carry... You really think this wasn't a hit job?

The classroom scenario was bogus...completely BOGUS. You're generally screwed if someone ambushes you. It doesn't matter if you're a fricken Navy Seal or some ninja operator. The guy knew all he had to do was open the door yelling, shoot the instructor quick and then turn his attention the shocked victim in the front row with an over sized shirt, big gloves and face-mask on.

As has been said it was bogus, a set up to reinforce a predetermined point. Reverse the rolls: Put the police instructor front and center in the classroom, with an oversized t-shirt, a face mask and gloves, with no clue someone is coming through the door, gun drawn, planning to shoot him... same result as the untrained student. If the fact they were trying to convey was the necessity and benefit of training, they could have done a more realistic encounter, then run the students through a major shooting school, and redid a realistic encounter to compare results.

I'm not saying the classroom scenario wasn't bogus, but the entire segment wasn't 100% flawed. I did catch the fact that the gun holder was always seated dead center. There was one that showed someone actually ran between the gun holder and the shooter and he wasn't hit! But again, even if it wasn't a fair battle, it still showed that even experienced people need additional training. I agree that it didn't give the holder a fair chance and even the best marksman would be hit in this test, but for the guys that don't know any better that might be carrying and think that they can hit the target because of video games, maybe they will look into some practice/range time after this. That's all I'm saying. I'm trying to see the positive in this, not always the negative.

If you've never had to draw and shoot while wearing gloves, you really need to try it. It's like starting over again. Add to that a clingy cover garment, and you're screwed.

Then, put on a mask that limits your peripheral vision and you're REALLY screwed.
