Guns stolen from tornado-damaged Minneapolis home

Postby xd ED on Thu May 26, 2011 5:58 am

"...History buffs aren't the only ones interested in World War II memorabilia.

After a tornado hit North Minneapolis on Sunday, burglars reportedly stole more than $6,300 worth of WWII guns and other military equipment from a dark home.

The missing weapons are an auto-ordnance, 1911, 45 pistol and a 9mm MP-40 semi-auto machine gun, said owner Scott Steben. The machine gun is a federally regulated weapon, and is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives...."

Full Story

Also from the article:
"...North Minneapolis has seen a slight increase in burglaries since the tornado hit, said Minneapolis police Sgt. Stephen McCarty. Officers plan to step-up patrols in the area to discourage property damage, thefts, burglaries and looting.

"All of these burglaries will be investigated to ensure that these are legitimate burglaries ..." and not people reporting the crimes for ulterior motives, McCarty said...."
(bold emphasis mine)

Is it me, or is that an odd statement for a police officer to make?
Shouldn't the comment(mindset) be along the lines of:
"We'll make every effort to recover property, and prosecute the offenders"...?

In the context of either a gun theft, or the geographic area in general, the remark smells of something.

ETA:

"...a 9mm MP-40 semi-auto machine gun, said owner Scott Steben. The machine gun is a federally regulated weapon, and is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives..."

REALLY? a registered semi-auto?

It could be registered as a short-barrelled rifle.

I'm not sure I would want my named used if I had a large collection of guns and lived on the north side

Sounds like he doesn't have one anymore.

Steben - and his WWII weapons and memorabilia - were at a WWII re-enactment in Farmington when the tornado hit. The home burglary happened later Sunday night.

With electrical lines down around his house, there was no electricity.

After Steben unloaded his vehicle, he said he quickly left the house to catch a late-night dinner with his family. He usually locks his guns in a safe, but not this time.

He was a renter too, no insurance.

They say $3,600 worth of firearms were stolen... A real MP-40 is around $20,000 on its own. A reproduction MP-38C is $3500, not adding on anything else. The MP-38C is a semi-auto pistol with the stock welded in place.

I smell a lot of bull@#$%....

So you think he is lying because he claimed the value as a lot LESS than what they were worth? Er..

Did you happen to READ the article. Clearly says $6,300 dollars worth. And just a few years ago mp38/40 kits were available for under a grand. Way to smear a guy when he's down

My wife is in the insurance field and there is no reason for a renter to not insure themselves. Both for their own property and damage that may happen to the landlords' property as a result of accident or negligence.

Yeah I read the article but I'm a bit dyslexic so I make mistakes like that... So you think this is a SBR and not a pistol? A dewat MP40 kit is a hell of a lot different than working firearm. The guy didn't do anyone any favors. I'll gladly smear him while he's down since he helped give the general public the idea that a "machine gun" was stolen because he was too lazy to lock it up after he got home.

The Strib article is completely different.. http://www.startribune.com/local/minnea ... 31354.html

If whoever kicked in Scott Steben's back door and stole the two World War II-era weapons thinks they can use the guns for shooting, they're probably mistaken.

Both weapons, a 45-caliber automatic pistol and a German sub-machine gun, are props for historical displays and war re-enactments and have been adapted to shoot blanks.

"They can make a lot of noise with it, but nothing's going to happen," Steben said Wednesday.

Steben, 47, had returned to his home in the tornado-hit 4000 block of Lyndale Av. N. in Minneapolis Sunday night after spending the weekend camping in the rain and playing the part of a German soldier in a re-enactment in Farmington. He didn't even know a tornado had ripped through the area.

Now, I've been down the 4000 block of Lyndale N four times since the storm. If this guy didn't realize a storm went through, I want some of what he is smokin' because the place is trashed. Tuesday the street was still one lane wide in spots because so many huge trees were down.

There's two things at work here conspiring from us getting the real story: 1) The media who wants you to believe all guns are bad and 2) a re-in-actor who is automatically cuckoo by definition. :D

That isn't how I read that. I read it as he didn't know a tornado had been through the area because he had been camping. He found out once he had returned home.
