Army: AWOL soldier admits to Fort Hood attack plan

(AP) KILLEEN, Texas — An AWOL soldier who had weapons stashed in a motel room near Fort Hood has admitted planning an attack on the Texas post, where 13 people died in 2009 in the worst mass shooting ever on a U.S. military installation, the Army said in an alert issued Thursday.

Pfc. Naser Abdo, a 21-year-old soldier granted conscientious objector status this year after he said his Muslim beliefs prevented him from fighting, was arrested Wednesday. Agents found firearms and "items that could be identified as bomb-making components, including gunpowder," in his motel room, according to FBI spokesman Erik Vasys.

Abdo's arrest came after the owners of a local gun store — the same store where the 2009 Fort Hood shootings suspect Maj. Nidal Hasan bought a pistol used in the attack — called police, the Army's alert said.

I read a report that he had something like 18 lbs of sugar and they referenced that as part of the bomb making material. What the hell can you make from sugar that goes "boom" [excluding anything that my wife might cook — with all due respect to her]? I've never tinkered with bombs outside of firecrackers as a kid, so I am clueless here.

Sugar burns.

Supposedly if you melt sugar with saltpeter, you get a nice smokebomb. Concealment, maybe?

Sugar is a useful base in any number of fun substances. There's a reason why it was rationed in WWII.

I made some military grade smokebombs as a kid using a recipe like this. ALso set fire to the garage. Parents were not impressed...

Did he also have a couple bags of Scott's Turfbuilder Plus and a gallon of E85 wired to a children's alarm clock like the Times Square (sic) Bomber?

Maybe they just left out part of his quote?
unless it involved fighting Americans.
