Godfrey Daniel! I would imagine that somewhere on the horizon will be the requirement to go to your county sheriff to get a purchase permit for a 5 lb bag of sugar.

Sugar+KNO3 is the second least fun fun thing to do with sugar. Sugar is fun stuff. Buy an old chem text book at a used book store and give it to a smart kid you'd like to see get into trouble.

Maybe they just left out part of his quote?
unless it involved fighting Americans.

Sure, KNO3+Sugar, contained, is fun. But it's not any more powerful that flash powder or similar. Sugar is a base in several things that use other fun stuff like RFNA, that put KNO3+Sugar to shame. Though KNO3 is super easy to get and nice and safe to work with, so it makes a good "playtime" compound, and it's a propellant, not an explosive, so it is, as far as I can tell, not regulated.

More details:

Authorities told FOX News Channel Saturday that in a search of Abdo's hotel room they found 18lbs (8kg) of sugar, a pressure cooker and smokeless gunpowder that was to be used as the trigger. He had enough bomb making materials for two bombs, they said.

It was revealed last week that police found a gun, ammunition, two clocks, and two spools of auto wire in Abdo's backpack, along with an article entitled "Make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom."

Inside Abdo's hotel room, police discovered an electric drill, two clocks, five shotgun shells, four razorblades and ammunition for guns.

The criminal complaint stated that Abdo admitted to planning to assemble two bombs in his hotel room using gunpowder and shrapnel placed into pressure cookers.

Here's the best part: http://news.bostonherald.com/news/natio ... position=5
Abdo also faces an Army court-martial on charges of possession of child pornography.

Apparently that's how they found his bomb-making stash - they were looking for his kiddie porn collection.
