When I was in either 6th or 7th grade, we had a local Firearms Safety instructor come in, he did a quick safety demo, emphasized the importance of treating everything as if it was loaded, and explained that shooting/hunting can be fun, but safety is important. This was all in '96 or '97, granted this was also in Bemidji... Although, I guess they don't do it anymore, not sure if it's because the guy retired, or the school did away with it, but it was part of Health class.
