Sad turn indeed. Dean was merely making an oblique reference to the deceased (and community honored, revered for his expertise in his chosen craft/career) person's name to evoke some sorely-needed humor. He was, in fact, spot on with his post in that regard.

Just speculation here, as are many of the posts here, but I would suspect that he wanted to be as far away from any firearm as possible when the Minneapolis police arrived. They might want to shoot first and ask if he was the perp afterwards.

I've only read the story once, but I thought the gun mentioned was the robber's which the good guy pointed out as evidence.

The reports that discussed it mentioned he(the permit holder) disarmed and unloaded. I wondered a bit myself why he would both disarm and leave his gun what sounded like some distance from himself; Certainly out of his immediate control.

I was wondering about this too, and the only thing I could come up with was that maybe he went and locked it in his car or something until police arrived.
