Letters to the Editor in today's Strib, one pro, one anti:

http://www.startribune.com/opinion/lett ... 59073.html

...I'm sure that gun-rights advocates will hail this as proof of the wisdom of "conceal and carry," but this smacks of vigilantism enabled by the right to carry a concealed gun.

RICHARD GIBSON, MINNEAPOLIS

...While anyone carrying a legal weapon should be extremely reluctant to respond, at times it is necessary. The case epitomizes the adage, "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away!" -- and it will seldom ever be different.

DALE VANDER LINDEN, DELANO, MINN

Edit...the Gibson guy wrote nearly the same thing on the deceased perp's Farcebook memorial page...

Just a snippet that I thought was interesting. I'm sure if everyone had continued to second guess the guy and complain about his actions without having a **** clue what had transpired, the star trib would have never noticed.......

3rd paragraph from the bottom:

The story of Evanovich's shooting was retold this week on several Internet forums and chat groups devoted to gun rights, with commentators affirming the legality of the shooting.

That may have been true in the 90s (when the selection rate from LTJG to LT was only 80%), but ever since there the advancement requirements have been "has a heartbeat" and "hasn't sunk a ship more than once." ;)

Jon Tevlin, Star Tribune, posted this piece:

Tevlin: Understandable impulse to help victim led to mugger's death

Best line:

When Minnesota first allowed people to carry guns, I was a little concerned the law would be abused and there would be a lot of situations like the one in south Minneapolis. I was wrong.

Tevlin's article is very good. This line, however, interested me the most. This might be grist for the mill in carry classes:

… Others countered that everyone has a right to make a citizen's arrest, and thus pursuit of the criminal was allowed. It would be silly to suggest that someone without a gun could pursue a criminal, but someone with one can't.

jdege wrote:In general, chasing after a criminal is not wise. But it's not illegal.

To chase someone down and kill him, after he no longer represents a threat, is illegal.

To follow him for any other purpose is perfectly legal. Chasing after him so that you can better identify him for police, or can better direct them as to where he fled, or even to confront him and demand the return of the purse that he had stolen, are all perfectly legal.

And if, while you are engaged in your perfectly legal chase, he should threaten you with death or grievous bodily harm, you are perfectly justified in shooting him.

And what was wrong with that situation? Other than a thug threatening to kill two people over a purse? Seems like we found a cure.

All that remains for me is a thank you email to Sgt. McDonald. If you think he deserves it, maybe you'll send one too.
