"We anticipate charging later today, possibly for manslaughter," said Police Cmdr. Tony Gruenig. "There was some negligence involved" in the handgun's firing, Gruenig said.

"Alcohol was a factor in the handling of the gun," he added. "We don't believe there was any intent [on the part of the father]".

A little more detail:

http://www.startribune.com/local/north/133145988.html
A 58-year-old man sat with his son drinking at a table in their Brooklyn Center home before "messing around" with a handgun led to the father killing the younger man with a shot to the chest, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday.

Even a drunk will be fine if they follow the safety rules.

"The son responded that the safety was on and put one of his hands on the barrel.

Howard Bascomb then pulled the trigger."

How else do you check the safety is on, Duh !

"...The elder Bascomb told police that he and has son were drinking rum-and-Cokes. He estimated having six drinks.

At some point, the father continued, he and his son decided to take apart the gun and put it back together...."

Sadly, now there can be but one outcome...

It may not have been the smartest thing ever but I can remember quite of few times, me and friends, of grabbing a case of shell and case of clays and a case of beer(each) going out to the back 40 and having a blast. Im sure we damaged our livers and killed a bunch of brain cells, but we are still kicking and just fine. Bare in mind that this was years ago and in the middle of BFE central mn.

I'd leave the guy alone.

The pain and agony of his living hell for killing his son will be torture enough for the rest of his life every time he turns around.

First, welcome to the forum. Second, you don't have to apologize for being new. Some folks measure a person's worth by post count. OTOH, some folks realize that life and consciousness doesn't begin with joining some group of online blowhards. :o :D

I blame this on societies irrational hostility towards guns and the resultant lack of training (both formal and informal training). If everyone received the proper training from an early age, starting with the parents, these two people would have known they were operating the weapon improperly.

I agree. Guns, like chainsaws and automobiles, can be dangerous when used while intoxicated. That should be part of the training.

he was a **** idiot to pull out a gun while drinking...

but to have to stare at every Christmas tree, Thanksgiving turkey and b-day present and remember a son he killed.

You can't put a prison together like that....

Get that man to a psychiatrist before he kills himself.
