The military uses that line of thinking quite often. If anyone is found in a certain area they're automatically assumed to be a threat unless proven otherwise.

Wow, and that is going to be really useful information at a trial to determine if you acted in self-defense.

Everyone I shot in the military was done as a result of attacking them. That is OFFENSE. It is significantly different than DEFENSE.

Just an FYI, since you apparently didn't get the memo that military rules of engagement don't exactly mirror Minnesota law.....

Who says you're going to be at a trial? You could just end up dead while you hesitate to determine if a threat exists or not.

I'd better head back to the "heavy belt" thread and start getting my tacticool on so I can be as prepared as all you operators on here. I'm amazed I ever lived through any gunfights. I must have been doing it wrong.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Just to be clear though, are you seriously saying that one should have the same mindset as the military in their home?

I was a big fan of throwing grenades into rooms ahead of me. I'm pretty sure that Gunstop is out of frag and concussion grenades this week.....

(You may want to read up on the logical fallacy of the false dichotomy. You seem to think that anything less than shooting first, asking questions later = rolling over and letting an intruder butt-rape your family. One can do many things in a continuum between the two that make dealing with an intruder safer for your family. Alarms. Dog(s), locking interior doors all come to mind. Justa say'n....)

Actually, I might embrace this chucking grenades into a room before entering. I was briefly considering getting an "entry" song that played as I enter a room, but I think your way may have more of the impact I'm looking for.

And after the alarms, dogs, all windows and doors locked. Then what? I have those bases covered. Then someone still made their way into my home?

it might just be a courteous criminal coming to inform you all your warning systems failed.

What if it's your kids sneaking back in? If you can take the time to identify them as not a threat, you can do the same with another unwanted guest.

It's been said however, that as soon as you see a weapon, the time for action is upon you.

If they are sneaking back in, then I got a real problem! Means they snuck out! Since they are under the age of 5! Man, they grow up fast!

You're the one suffering from a false dichotomy. I never said you should shoot first and ask questions later. I responded to your comment disagreeing with folks who took a "anyone in my house is automatically a threat" approach. Anyone who's in my house I don't know about is automatically a threat. How I deal with that threat is completely up to my discretion. Perhaps I'll call the police and retreat, or I might open up with everything I've got and never give the intruder/s warning.

Just to be clear though, are you seriously saying that one should have the same mindset as the military in their home?

People can adopt any mindset they want or feel is appropriate depending upon the circumstances they face. Who the hell are you to determine which is the best approach?

What kids? Apparently you know something I don't! Identifying someone you know as not being a threat is much easier than determining if you're dealing with a confused Alzheimer's patient, or heavily armed escaped felon/s.

Nobody said you couldn't adapt any mindset you want. I just asked, based upon your statement, whether or not you actually thought acting like the military in your home was a good idea. Do you?

I used the military as an example of an organization that can deal with threats similarly to the line of thinking you disagreed with. The military doesn't always act the same way in all situations, and neither should a home owner. Is using CQB techniques "acting like the military"? Is leveling your entire house with explosives "acting like the military"?

If someone/something has entered your house that you can't identify, it presents a threat. A loud noise or other event also presents a threat. If you hear glass breaking at night do you try to flee your residence? Do you call the police an try to barricade yourself in a room? Do you investigate the disturbance? Do you just start laying down fire in that general direction? It all depends on the situation and your mindset.

Unfortunate situtation but I guess I don't blame the homeowner. I can tell who is in my house just by the way they walk. Late at night if someone is coming home 9 out of ten times I can guess right who it is. 10 out of 10 times my dogs guess right and start barking if anything sounds different. But on the other hand I don't start laying down fire either if something seems off. Point being, when you're around the same people everyday that you live with even work with, you start to pick up on how they carry themselves and the cadence of their steps and such. Or am I the only one that notices this?

Yeah, and apparently there actually are "start laying down fire in the general direction" people around here.......
