OK, some lessons we can take from this experience.
1. Things can happen quickly and within bad breath distance.

2. It's not good to be within bad breath distance, watch what's going on around you and cross the street or something.

3. Even from several feet away, someone can rush us/knock us down before we can access a weapon. Seriously, 20-30 feet can be covered in 1.5-2 seconds by a fast young punk.
To recognize that threat, then get a CONCEALED weapon out is not going to be as smoothly done as when you are practicing with no emotional stress (assuming one practices drawing from concealment at home - unloaded -double check unloaded - or air soft of course!).
4. It's good to have some realistic unarmed skills, because you just might have to fight.

On that last note, I just happened to see that there's a good deal for new students at the Minnesota Kali Group http://www.mnkali.com
Rick Faye, and his instructors, offer premium training in a lot of street effective skills. I'd encourage everyone here to check out his school. They are offering some kind of deal on "google offers" on June 2nd. Take advantage or tell someone else about it. I GET NOTHING FOR THIS! I just believe it's that good of info to share. Judo and Jujitsu can also be good for hands on training.
Here's the standard offer for a free week of "sampling the goods".
"Come try us out for a Free trial week of classes!
To the Prospective/New Student:
Welcome to the most exciting and innovative Martial arts school in the Twin Cities. This is the most fun you will have while learning serious martial arts. During your trial week you are welcome to try our classes over a period of seven consecutive days. Come in and use the facility as well. . ."

I will bet he will never speak up. either way it happened and it's terrible. I want to know how exactly it went down that the victim got his gun removed from his person in the first place? My only speculation that it was open carry in a cheap fobus paddle with no means of retention. Armchair quarterbacking over.

As the article is lacking in any real info, the following is almost pure speculation on my part:

The attacker picked his spot- possibly a fence on one side of the walk, and parked cars on the street, next to a narrow blvd; a narrowed path allowed for passing close to the victim without causing suspicion. He then planned for the victim and himself to meet at a precise point.(about the oldest ambush technique in history: force your victim into a precise spot and attack) He sucker-punched the victim, and then threw him against a car, took advantage of the element of surprise, and a dazed victim.

In all honesty, such a scenario could trap anyone there, which leads to the best defense: not being there.
I'm guessing this has happened before, that this attack became newsworthy was because of the firearm.

No matter how much you prepare, or how much time you spend in condition red gold star omicron delta omegapony, you can still get mugged and have your gun stolen. This story just shows that there are risks being in public, and a gun won't help you out every time.

But that doesn't mean it won't help you out some of the time. At least he didn't get shot with his own gun. That would have been bad for many reasons.

since we're speculation, I'd suggest maybe he got bum rushed, thrown into a car, and was so dazed that he couldn't resist when the mugger frisked him. Alternately, maybe he got bum rushed, thrown into a car, went to get the gun but was dazed or too injured to get it out and then the mugger saw or removed it when frisking him.

Doesn't have to be open carried to be discovered when you're out of it or the mugger has you at a severe physical disadvantage.

since we're speculating, it could be that he was just dazed and confused as a the day he was born. Even if he had the gun in his hand, cocked, locked, and loaded hidden in his pocket he still would have been victimized.

What if the permit holder had shot the guy? What would the headline have been then?
