There's the problem isn't it? We can either accept that the ability to do bad things is a necessary side effect of the blessings of liberty, or we can decide how much liberty we will surrender in hopes of controlling the culture that is fomenting this mindless violence. I admit that I've thankfully never had a child killed by random gunfire, but I believe the scales should tip to freedom before security. IMO in a free society, the only hope of preventing these occurrences while still maintaining personal liberty is by hoping that education and criminal punishment will eventually make a difference. In the meantime we'll have to take the bad with the good.

I agree with everything you say. Like I said, I'm looking for solutions to the illegal gun problem. We know limiting access to law abiding citizens won't deal with the issue at all, nor will adding limitations based on silly cosmetic reasons. That doesn't mean these issues can't be reduced, but the solutions will revolve around things other than gun control. Education, opportunities, training, etc, are probably FAR more effective at reducing these incidents than banning the weapons.

It's not an illegal gun problem, it's an illegal gun owner problem.

One start would be for a prohibited person caught with a firearm to automatically get 10 years. No judges discretion, no "recommended sentencing" guidelines, just a straight 10 years with no possibility for early parole. That ought to get the attention of those that think that a firearm makes you a tough guy.

Yah... that couldn't be abused at all.

They have reaped what they sow. Keep your mouth shut/do'nt snitch. Now the thugs are running the place and they want some one else to FIX it. Only "they" can stop it.

This is not the first time that this has happened in Minneapolis.

No it sure isn't. I made some service calls on Chicago Ave S, shortly after, and not far from where a similar shooting occurred. There was absolutely no furniture in the front rooms of the houses. The kids were to stay out of that part of the house, and they sat on the floor, below the window sill level...
And even then, for whatever reason those folks don't go the police about the goings-on around them, and remain at the mercy of the local thugs.

Unfortunately, the code of silence, and fear of retribution are very real and literally killing that community.

"This is outrageous that someone would put a gun in the hands of a kid," said Rybak, who complained about lax gun control laws.

"I'm almost physically sick when I think about the fact that there are people in legislative bodies in this state and in this country who think it's somehow better to have more guns on the street," said Rybak. "This has nothing to do with hunting and everything to do with hunting down people... I'm pissed off."

Chief Dolan echoed those concerns, saying common sense gun registration and restrictions similar to those in place in Canadian cities would help clean up gun violence here.

I suggest that Dolan and all the other idiots that think like him move to Canada, where they can enjoy common sense gun restrictions to their hearts content.

I read that article the morning. Also saw a TV report that suggested that the house got shot up as retaliation for a house on another block getting shot up due to a "... dispute between groups of people...".
Another reporter said that the dead child's immediate family blamed it on a "family dispute".
According to the news report the Mpls Police have been called to this house 30+ times since grandma moved in in 2010....

So let me get this straight....a group of criminals had an ongoing dispute, performed criminal acts against each other in the process criminally murdered an innocent....and somehow imposing MORE laws will stop this from occurring again? :?

No, keeping the thugs off the street and away from each other will stop this from occurring again! :!:
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Perhaps when one is as clueless and inept as the current crop of civic 'leaders' appear to be, any and every course of action seems equally effective.

Why don't we just put them on double secret probation?

I heard a report on the radio yesterday that witnesses were reporting two different caliber weapons involved. No mention has been made as to whom else lives at that address that may have also been firing. It's tragic, and I feel bad for the victim but the adults get little sympathy from me if half of what I've been hearing is true.
