Tragedy. What possesses people to do something like this?

Of course in the comments, the stupid masses are screaming for guns to be outlawed, while one or two level headed people bring up the very good point of...well, if guns were outlawed, this would have happened anyway, because criminals and psychopaths don't care what's legal or not.

I fear the direction society is going.

MAJOR fodder for anti-gun initiatives.

Cinemark, of course, does not allow firearms in their theaters.

Is it accurate that either law or policy prohibited firearms in this theater in colorado?

I feel terrible for the victims and their families.

This reinforces a couple of lessons:

1. When you enter any place, orient yourself with an escape route, preferably a different way than the way you came in.
2. Always carry.

The world is a dangerous place, and we don't get to know when we may need to defend ourselves and our loved ones.

Terrible tragedy. Saw some comments from eyewitnesses bemoning no one tried to engage that was carrying. From some eyewitness accounts that have been reported, I don't see that such a oppurtunity presented itself.

The purpose of a firearm in a defensive situation is to make the other guy leak from holes he was not born with. Your job is to install those orifices for him.

If you have a pistol, take it with you everywhere. This shooting is the darker reality of the world we live in.

I know a lot of people with permits who do not carry their pistol. They think they only need it if they’ll be in a “bad” area.
There are no such things as “safe” places, that is why I’ve trained even Pastors and other churchgoers to carry. There are some churches that ought not be messed with! Too bad a permit holder didn't do this guy in.

I hope they hold the person responsible for this tragedy fully accountable for his actions.

Un-neccessay and completely senseless.

Hard to contemplate the motives of someone who is apparantly walking in his own reality.

Hard to believe that there wasn't someone in that crowd with the means to neutralize this threat. I don't know much about Colorado laws and the Personal Defense environment there.

Colorado population approximately 5,100,000.
Permit to carry licenses issued are approximately 140,000 or 2.75 percent of the population.
Approximately 225 people per theater max seating.
If this was a 16 screen theater the maximum seating would be 3600 people or around 100 permit holders.
The theater was not at maximum capacity, probably banned guns, and not all permit holders actually carry. So the chances that a permit holder would be around and in a position to do anything is not great.

Shooter has been identified as James Holmes 24.

President Obama to speak at 11:20am about the shooting.
