The only difference this morning between Officer Tom Decker and me this morning is that I am alive. The felon that I did the "welfare check" on last night had decided to hang himself instead of projecting his destructiveness outward.

These are the days that my emotions run high and I happily give a big **** YOU to the cop bashers here on this forum and anywhere else they may be.

These are the days I value my family that are LEO's even more. They take risks every day that I can only imagine. As well, they see the dregs of society that we merry villagers don't have to see.

My heart goes out to the Deputies family, and my respect to all the officers in uniform.

just heard about this from a shipping manager here.

Not good....He was called for a suicide check on the guy who then ambushed him.

Sorry to hear this.

Many years ago when I was still working in county law enforcement in Indiana, my county sheriff went to conduct a welfare check on a guy that we had dealt with many times on mental health issues. What normally was a very routine interaction nearly became deadly when he attacked the sheriff in his driveway and attempted to get his firearm.

The sheriff was able to call for assistance and hold him off long enough for a number of other officers to arrive.

We all talked that night how lucky we were - that he was - that things didn't turn out worse than they did.

My heart goes out to this man's family, friends, and department.

I have an older Brother who is a Retired LEO. "health and welfare checks and Domestic Calls scared the hell out of me" I don't blame him. I have nothing but respect and admiration for all first responder's.
I will add this officer and his family to my thoughts and prayers.
