Background check requests for gun purchases are up 60% in WI. The Wisconsin Department of Justice's background check hotline for handgun purchases has handled 60% more calls year to date as of Dec. 23 than it did for the same period last year, and the total number of calls in 2012 has far surpassed all of 2011. I can't find anything locally about MN but maybe I did not look hard enough. Anybody know?

That's probably because they passed a carry law this year.

ding ding ding! we have a winner! I am sure that is the primary reason, the events as of late also help to encourage it as well

Month over month totals by state would show that volume is up overall and that it's an ongoing trend with predictable spikes

Here is a pic of the pdf report. It has been interesting to read the news stories about the 2.7 million number for December.

Found here: http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/nics/reports/20130102_1998_2012_state_monthly_totals.pdf
Here's the data in a table in case you're interested:
WI NICS Data.jpg

I included 2010 - 2012 so we could see a "normal" year to spot a pattern or a change from pattern.
The number of Nics checks by month is what we want to see. You can look at that as a raw number which shows a pattern.

You're correct, the huge spike in NOV 2011 affected things. The odd thing is that January didn't fall back off quite as far. ... The year STARTED strong and STAYED there, You'll also note that the normal November drop off didn't happen this year ... now why could that be? ;-)

Heck, look at the average month for each year ...
2010: 16,233 checks
2011: 26,897 checks
2012: 39,115 checks
