the Chief memoed the department to eat ANYWHERE but Denny's...

Did this really happen?
That seems kind of petty, and vindictive.
-Paint the bridges, don't burn them-

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) – Belleville police chief Bill Clay is ordering his officers to get their pancakes from anywhere but Denny’s, calling the restaurant “political stupidness.”

The new orders come after a New Year’s Day clash between five detectives and one Denny’s manager.

The department says the detectives were out of uniform but wearing their badges, when manager David Rice asked them to either leave or put their guns in their vehicle.

Rice, told the detectives that one of their weapons, specifically a female detective’s gun, was making another diner feel uncomfortable.

As the officers were leaving, without their food, General Manager Michael Van walked up and corrected the manager and said it was fine for them to stay, but the officers said it would be too awkward and they left.

Denny’s corporate office has released an apology saying, “Denny’s policy permits law enforcement officials to carry their firearms in the restaurant and we regret any misunderstanding.”

An employee at the Belleville Denny’s didn’t want to talk about the confrontation to KMOX, but some Denny’s customers said the presence of police and their guns was not an issue.

That is sad.
I wonder if Police chief Bill Clay could have taken some higher ground.
If he is ordering his staff to ignore Denny's, would that create a security risk at that store?
Some thug might think that the police department doesn't like Denny's, so we'll just rob the place at our leisure.

A chief asking for LEO's to stay away from a business could be considered an attack (By the police department) on that business.

The memo was to not eat there, not to ignore calls if there was an emergency. They, and we, have the choice to frequent an establishment or not. I doubt that police would eat there after this incident memo or no memo.

Sooooooooooooooooo..........what you are saying is that trained people carrying guns in a place makes it safer than it would be if they weren't there? ;)

Personally, let the place get robbed as proof that the aforementioned trained people with guns make a place safer than not. Now it's impractical and unaffordable to have a cop on every corner, so what about just letting everyday citizens carry firearms once they've been certified and trained on them? A novel idea!!!

Even the anti-s couldn't argue the point logically.........well, ok, they never use logic so they would still argue the point, but any sane person would see the point so obvious that they could only miss it if they wanted to.

Yep, I agree.

Let the place get robbed: no.
Let the people carry guns: yes.

I lost track of which point you were talking about. For me, I see gun control as loss of freedom, or implementation of slavery.

Being able to own a firearm might help if someone wants to turn you into a slave.

There are other ways to prevent someone from turning you into a slave. Not to mention on a simple basic thought level, comparing being a slave and not being allowed to own a certain type of firearm has got to be one of the dumbest things ever said on this forum. It's rhetoric like that which makes it tough to take this community seriously.

We did it on the second Saturday of every month for a few years. Switched to Old Country Buffet about two years ago. IIRC, it had something to do with less than satisfactory treatment by the management there (of course, people skipping out on their bill didn't help matters, either).

Where is that and what are they details? Also, is there a list somewhere of the meet and greets going on for carry folks?

I'm on my phone so I can't post a link, but look in the 'other events' for the 2nd Saturday breakfast. I just posted it this AM. Not to be confused with the open carry Breakfast @ the gopher a week later.
Like to have you(all) join us.

Bribery, eh? ;-)

I usually assume that the restaurant will be comping their meal anyway, so I tell my server to put it on their tab.

Actually it is a sign of respect and apreciation.

being disarmed doesn't make you a slave, but it sure makes that transformation a lot easier for the masters.
