It's official: The drone war has come home to America. Wanted fugitive Christopher Dorner, the homicidal former cop currently at war with the LAPD, has become the first known human target for airborne drones on U.S. soil. Their use was confirmed by Customs and Border Patrol spokesman Ralph DeSio, who revealed the government's fear that Dorner will make a dash for the Mexican border. The fugitive has already killed three people, according to police, and has a $1 million bounty on his head. Dorner, who has military training, is believed to be hiding in the wilderness of California's San Bernardino Mountains, where locating him without air support may be all but impossible.

Makes perfect sense to me. Good use of the technology. I realize that the news media wants me to be upset about the use of drones on US soil but I can't work up any outrage. Get back to me if they launch a Hellfire at him.

no, it's not the first "drone" case.

http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/201 ... fight-case

The tiny town of Lakota, N.D., is quickly becoming a key testing ground for the legality of the use of unmanned drones by law enforcement after one of its residents became the first American citizen to be arrested with the help of a Predator surveillance drone.

The bizarre case started when six cows wandered onto Rodney Brossart's 3,000 acre farm. Brossart, an alleged anti-government "sovereignist," believed he should have been able to keep the cows, so he and two family members chased police off his land with high powered rifles.

How are you not upset given the broad allowance for use of drones against people that has been permitted? Now, IIRC, they only have to have strong suspicion of terroristic threats/behavior to be able to shoot with a drone against somebody, no proof, no innocence until proven guilty (if that really existed in the first place anyway). The ramifications of this could lead to a hellfire coming to visit near you, not because of something you did, but because of something the person 2 away from you is thought to have done. That puts you in the kill box.

Clarify for me, and document, that the drones looking for Dorner are armed. And while we're getting all upset about another aspect of law enforcement surveillance, show me the plans to use drones on US soil to actually shoot at American citizens.

Like I said, let me know when the shooting starts from these drones. Until then...how is this different than any other form of surveillance?

 sheesh

They're talking about using aerial survellance, not an air-to-ground rocket attack like in Pakistan or Yemen. Big difference.

[edit to add:] Like hmac said.

Not much different than going out looking for him with a Cessna 172, except where the pilot sits.

even with our BS gov it would be a while if ever before armed drones would be used within the US borders. 'course there is that executive order guy out there  that doesn't appear to care if his orders are legal or not.

Various unmanned systems have been used in ISR roles on the borders for years.

So, if he shoots down one of these drones, would that be considered an attack on police, or just a property crime?

Shoot down a Predator at 10,000 feet? Really?

What was that movie? Bourne Legacy? That was a fairly entertaining movie.
