You don't have to be the victim to forgive someone. Or to have empathy.

I have plenty of empathy. You needn't worry about that. But empathy and forgiveness are NOT the same thing at all, and you know it.

In this case, I'd reserve my empathy for the crime victims, and perhaps this kid's family.

I don't believe, however, that I am in any position to forgive someone who hasn't done anything to ME.

As that prayer famously says, ..."as we forgive those who trespass AGAINST us."

I feel sorry for whoever lost their van. Because people shouldn't have to worry about some drunk a-hole running off with their stuff and wrecking it.

I also feel sorry for those he assaulted with it prior to this incident that caused them enough distress to call 911 on him.

I also think it's wrong that we have laws prohibiting us from booby-trapping the wiring on our cars. If someone cuts their hand off trying to steal your car - they earned it.
