The idea on the surface isn't bad, parents are responsible for their kids. The problem is the underlining message with how it is being presented.

They don't care about the safety of children, they want to flush out the obviously bad parents so the brown shirts know who they are. inhttp://www.startribune.com/opinion/co ... 38571.html

I thought national ASK day, was the day your kids asked if their parents would take them out for a safe, fun day of shooting...?

It's sad when something that is obviously a good idea in general is poo-poo'd for political reasons.

Isn't knowing what your kid is doing Parenting 101? I don't have any spawn, so can't really say for sure. But it seems like it should be a pretty basic function of raising demons.

I agree. However, it still remains that gun owners should be cautious about who they talk to about their guns and their storage. It IS a good conversation to have, but in the current political climate it is one that often times should not be had. I speak from experience on this. Things can go very quickly from a simple conversation to try to rationally discuss the concerns of another parent to anti gun zealots causing an unending stream of problems for you in your community.

The conversation requires a basic level of trust, which is difficult when dealing with a person whose mentality is that if that object exists, then anyone near it can never be trusted.

I'm not poo-pooing it for political reasons, I think we are largely poo-pooing the article because it pretends that firearms are the only danger to kids in a house and that they possess the ability to stalk around and kill at will. Why not ASK day for how the neighbor keeps his household chemicals? While most parents keep them locked under the sink for the first few years I don't know anyone that keeps their lawn chemicals, pool chemicals, etc. for the yard locked up in the garage- it's wide open for the kids to get into.

Kitchen knives?

How you tie up the cords on the blinds so a child doesn't choke themselves? Do your kids have access to plastic bags from the grocery store they can slip over their heads?

You are correct that part of Parenting 101 is knowing the neighbor, but the first line of defense for my two young girls was me teaching them how to handle things like knives, cords, plastic bags, and of course, guns. The one old enough to play at neighbor's houses knows to tell me when something isn't safe. Part of good parenting means your house is as safe as it needs to be, but it is MY responsibility to give my kids proper instruction so they don't suffocate themselves in the bag your apples came home in from the store.

I don't doubt this youngster's parents are quite concerned about what guns might be in that house...

from last night's storm:

This from a newspaper whose policy it is not to photograph kids on bicycles without helmets because of the example it might present.

Who the hell comes up with this sh*t?

I think it's a great idea. You should always ask parents of your kid's friends if they have guns in the home. If they say 'No', the next question should be 'How do you intend to protect my child if someone intent on doing them harm breaks in while he/she is over there?'

The idea is not a bad one, and that's not being disparaged, merely the rather transparent tactic employed by the media.

All of my neighbors know I am the neighborhood "Gun Nut" and call me the local Arsenal. They also know that I make my own ammo. My house has ALWAYS been the house that all the kids hung out at. They are now in college amd I am extremely proud of all of them. They consider me their "second dad" because I insisted that if they hung out at my home, where I had many weapons, that each of them were taught the proper SAFE handling of a firearm. Each of theor parents had to come to my house and see exactly what their kids were exposed too, and how I would instruct each of them. Every parent, was glad I took the time to teach their kids (and sometimes the parents as well) and they always knew their kids are safe at my house.

Now, when they all come home for summer break, I load up a stock pile of ammo, and we get everybody together for a day at the range. I love it, when the ypumg men, out shoot their parents....lol. It's not as funny when they beat me. All of these young men have grown up respecting and understanding firearms and every single one of them, often thank me for taking my time to teach them. Even the parents that didn't particularly like guns, are now happy as well.

I feel lucky to have had the opportunity and look forward to teaching their children ( my "step" grandkids) in the future. :D

You have done more to advance true education in firearms than you think. THANK YOU for your good works and positive contribution to firearms and humankind as well.
