Chronicling the underappreciated black tradition of bearing arms for self-defense, this book presents an array of examples reaching back to the pre—Civil War era that demonstrate a willingness of African American men and women to use firearms when necessary to defend their families and communities. From Frederick Douglass’s advice to keep “a good revolver” handy as defense against slave catchers to the armed self-protection of Monroe, North Carolina, blacks against the KKK chronicled in Robert Williams’s Negroes with Guns, it is clear that owning firearms was commonplace in the black community.

Nicholas Johnson points out that this story has been submerged because it is hard to reconcile with the dominant narrative of nonviolence during the civil rights era. His book, however, resolves that tension by showing how the black tradition of arms maintained and demanded a critical distinction between private self-defense and political violence.

Johnson also addresses the unavoidable issue of young black men with guns and the toll that gun violence takes on many in the inner city. He shows how complicated this issue is by highlighting the surprising diversity of views on gun ownership in the black community. In fact, recent Supreme Court affirmations of the right to bear arms resulted from cases led by black plaintiffs.

Surprising and informative, this well-researched book strips away many stock assumptions of conventional wisdom on the issue of guns and the black freedom struggle.

The author of this book in on Mitch Bergs show right now....it will be available via Stream from 1280 am The Patriot.

Reminds me of John Lott / Massad Ayoob.

Clarence Thomas went over some of these issues in his McDonald Decision....Armed blacks warding off a lynch mob in front of the Sheriff's Jail.

I'm getting an Image for a Poster....

A Big Fat Chicago Cop/

A pile of Dead Black Teenagers (414 in 2013)/

and Otis Mc Donald with a Colt 1911 .45

and the headline 'Power to the People'

I think an image / argument / Headline something like ..."No Legal guns for Negroes.....

How's that workin' out for ya Chicago' Is the kind of Bitch-Slap-In-The-Face that Heather / Paymar need

in upcoming MN Gun hearings at the Capitol.

Oleg Volk is the master of the sarcastic poster...this just in....I Googled "Oleg Volk / no guns for Negroes" and this popped up....haven't seen this one before...dated Jan 4 ,2013.....Three weeks after the Sandy Hook Mass Shooting.

Quick note: It looks like Oleg Volk has been busy and has some new posters:

He allows 'royalty free' usage of his images for 2A people and requests a link back to one of his websites in return.
He Denys usage to Anti's.

thanks for posting these, gunsmith!

Here is an article by the NRA-ILA that talks about the history of race and gun control: http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/fact-sheets/1999/saturday-night-specials.aspx
Efforts to prevent blacks from arming had a well-established history in the United States. The French Black Code (1751) required Louisiana colonists to stop and, "if necessary," beat "any black carrying any potential weapon. . . ." After Nat Turner`s rebellion, the Virginia legislature made it illegal for free blacks "to keep or carry any firelock of any kind, any military weapon, or any powder or lead." Maryland considered dogs to be weapons, and permitted any white to shoot any unlicensed dog owned by a free black. Mississippi prohibited blacks from owning dogs. In 1834, Tennessee revised Article XI, Section 26 of its Constitution to read "That the free white men of this State have a right to keep and bear arms for their common defense," inserting the words "free white men" to replace "freemen," whose rights were protected when the Constitution was ratified in 1796.12

The laws in that paragraph are a little old, but I think they are important in setting the stage for the Saturday Night special laws passed in the 70's, which dispraportionately affect the poor/people of color.

Laws banning so-called "Saturday night specials": cheap handguns that allegedly were the favorites of African-Americans involved in urban crime and violence, supposedly because they were cheap enough to toss and replace. In their modern form they're laws banning guns that don't meet certain metallurgical standards, excluding most of the guns formerly sold on the low-end market.

Someone who knows more about firearms would have to address that. I can tell you that laws banning inexpensive guns favored by "those people" go back at least to the post-Civil War era.

I'm probably just 'stating the obvious' here but...

Gay marriage became a viable issue once it was framed as a 'civil rights' issue....

Is enough effort being made to show Gun Ownership as a 'civil rights issue' ? I don't think I hear enough about the racist element of historical gun control....we should be waving the posters of 'Blacks with Arms' in their faces.
