It might be a useless, victimless crime, but it is still a crime, and ridiculously not smart in a post Sandy Hook level of paranoia.
It didn't sound like the school wanted him arrested, just to leave the property while he was carrying. It sounded like the school acted reasonably. They could have overreacted and called for SWAT teams and hostage negotiators, but instead simply asked him to comply. The police charging him is likely politically motivated, to set an example for other parents to keep the law from being broken as a matter of policy.
I completely disagree with the underlying premise of the law, which is that responsible armed adults cannot be in proximity to children or schools for some reason. Given that the law does exist though, it seems like all parties acted reasonably after the parent was asked to leave. It could have been greatly overreacted to, and gone much worse than it did. Chances are, no students were even aware of it, when they could have been traumatized by going into an "active shooter" lockdown.
Overall not a smart move at all, but handled well by all parties.
