Parents furious over Florida school's surprise 'active shooter' drill

An unannounced “active shooter drill” at a Florida middle school left teachers and students frightened and confused, and has angered parents who say police and administrators terrified their children.

The Thursday morning drill at Jewett Middle Academy in Winter Haven began when the school principal announced the school was going on lockdown. Winter Haven police officers then burst into classrooms brandishing guns, including an unloaded AR-15 rifle, to check on students huddled in the dark. Teachers were also clueless a drill was taking place.

“All of sudden there was a gun barrel,” 8th-grader Xavier Tate told "Fox & Friends"Sunday, describing what he saw from his classroom. “We didn’t know it was a drill. We thought it was a gunman (coming) right through the door.”

“It was very scary,” he said......

The school informed parents of the drill afterward. A spokesman for the Polk County Schools told MyFox Tampa Bay that it’s standard procedure for these types of drills to take place without giving parents, students or teachers advanced warning. In a statement the school district said “we regret any concern that parents and students might have experienced.”

Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird also defended the drill, saying, “it really is to protect the children.”

On Friday Bird announced that future lockdown drills will be conducted by uniformed officers without weapons.

Absolutely ridiculous.

Probably a good thing they are practicing, though not notifying people not so good.

I wonder how this would have worked if it was done in the state legislative building while they were in session...

It's all ok so long as those doing it say it is for the children, apparently.

They did one a couple years ago at a teacher in service in Utah I think, burst into a room of teachers at a conference table. Lucky nobody got shot, all it takes is one teacher who doesn't think following the rules is worth dying for. Surprised nobody has had a heart attack either.

If it was a high school chem lab, macgyver-ing something wih acids and bases shouldn't be that hard and I suck at chemistry. Metal shop could prolly weld the door shut and heat the door knob to bacon frying temps. I for one would just not sit and wait! Until I hear this is "a drill" I have to asume otherwise...

There are just so many ways where could go really wrong, which is why you have to tell people that will be in school that the lock-down is a drill and armed cops will be clearing each room in turn. The thinking challenged individual(s) that came up with idea should fired.

BTW: The vid of those cops huffing and puffing about the school carrying fully auto military weapons was hard to watch, (imho) maybe instead of unanounced drills they could have anounced gym time... Probably the only things they could out run are donuts and that might be the problem.

Example of something going wrong...

I had a shop teacher telling us the standard procedures on the first day and how in an emergency we're supposed to sit there. He said something to the effect of, "with all of the tools and equipment in here we'd have a pretty good shot at fighting back"

Cool Teacher :D

I believe that making improvised weapons and actively resisting can have a better result than waiting like sheep to be slaughtered.

I don't understand how that Principal could ever think that was a good idea. What's just as bad is that the Police and other administrators must have also thought it was a good idea to be involved with. Lack of good judgment by so many people. Drills are one thing, this was so far beyond reasonable logic that those involved in organizing it should all be held accountable.

Maybe it is me, but lately people just seem unable to think past an action.

I am pretty sure he needed to do the drill, he went over it with the police, made the plan, and it looked good. Thats were the thinking stopped. No one asked the question how will staff and students react. I just did not occur to them, If someone in the meeting brought it up it would be dismissed. Its like they hit a wall and no matter what is tried they just are unable to look past that wall.

I see this kind of thinking (as an example) in anti-gunners, we make a place safe by banning guns "thinking stops" no leap made to criminals will exploit this.

Perhaps this is a failing of the educational system?
