There has been no surrender and No White Flag. The ATF has not given up on this ban, they took a time out to "evaluate" the thousands of comments.

The agency said in a statement on Tuesday it would not seek to issue the final guidelines "at this time." The proposal pertained to M855 "green tip" ammunition, used in the AR-15 rifle, which regulators looked at banning because it can pierce police body armor.

The ATF said it would instead wait until Americans have finished commenting on the federal regulations and evaluate their comments and suggestions before "proceeding with any framework."

The "Comment" period ends March 16th.

This is far from over and is certainly not any sort of victory. They are simply making a public statement that their decision will be based on all the thousands of comments. Yeah right.

Why so cynical?
What do you think carried more weight, the 80,000 civilian letters or the majority seat holders in the senate and House? Because it was the NRA who brought this to those who actually drafted the letters to the ATF. Those letters don't get written and signed by so many without the efforts of the NRA.

For the NRA haters
The administration's effort is under fire on Capitol Hill where 55 percent of all House members have signed a letter challenging BATFE's proposal.

Led by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Bob Goodlatte and the National Rifle Association, 235 members have signed the letter. The signatures came in at a record pace since Goodlatte's team and the NRA have been circulating it for just three business days.

... for purposes of this discussion the NRA is a lobbying organization that has influence BECAUSE it has a large number of politically active members who further supported their efforts by individually engaging their political representatives on this issue. We're kind of splitting hairs (like that ever happens around here) but Aftermath is making an important point, the NRA would not have the influence to get congressional action taken without such active and engaged members within it's ranks further enhanced by the individuals who stepped up and engaged their representatives directly.

Understood, however, "we" should all be the NRA if you say "they" then you're doing it wrong.

"Although ATF endeavored to create a proposal that reflected a good faith interpretation of the law and balanced the interests of law enforcement, industry, and sportsmen, the vast majority of the comments received to date are critical of the framework, and include issues that deserve further study," the government agency wrote about the decision.

It appears they have not totally abandoned the issue yet, just delayed a final decision until later. I'm guessing they got called out on declaring M855 as AP when it clearly is not by their own definition, and now they want to just leave the issue alone while not changing their classification of M855.

...and with the recent Supreme Court ruling that t federal agencies do not have to follow procedures for notifying the public and collecting comment when changing the interpretations of rules, the ATF will do this silently and quietly without any input from citizens or Congress.

The NRA is the most visible gun organization on the national level, so I accept that people use it as a shorthand for organized pro-gun citizens, even when the actual NRA is lackluster in protecting gun rights. Certainly the antis say "The NRA" as if it were a monolithic entity responsible for imposing alien values on an unwilling public.

That's probably their plan. Let things calm down, then ban it without anyone knowing.

Tactics. Now they're going to raise concerns about all forms of 5.56 ammo. Challenge them on one type and they counter with a veiled threat to ban it all.

What's "military-style ammo"? Did they just make that up?

Bureaucrats make sore losers.
