Still, they decried Democrats’ move to make gun control a purity test, shutting the door on potential Democrats by turning “small gaps into massive issues,” especially given Republicans’ willingness to accept a wider range of views on many issues, Alduri said. “I think it’s sad that we have gotten to this point where the left thinks that they’re not allowed to own guns in order to stay aligned Democratic Party.”

Glad to see that there are still small-l liberals in the sense of being in favor of fewer restrictions on freedom.

It may have largely passed away from public awareness now, but once upon a time from roughly 1965 to 1975 the radical left had a brief love affair with guns. This was the era of the Black Panthers, who swore they'd resist police brutality by armed force if necessary. You had anarchists like Claire Wolfe in "101 things to do 'til the revolution" and Abbie Hoffman in "Steal This Book" who advised people on the Left to arm themselves. Romain Gary in his nonfiction book "White Dog" related Black Power advocates actually volunteering to serve in Vietnam— to gain combat experience for the race war they were certain was eventually going to break out. And there were revolutionary groups like the Weather Underground and the Symbionese Liberation Army*.

* whose only long-term accomplishment was probably inspiring the formation of the BATFE: ostensibly a tax enforcement agency, in practice set up as a paramilitary police force prepared to do literal battle with groups armed with explosives and full-auto firearms.
