Excuse the link to the Red Star article...

Madelia homeowner charged in home invasion shooti

A southern Minnesota homeowner was charged Monday in a home invasion incident that left one man dead and another wounded.

David A. Petterson, who lives southeast of Madelia, was charged in Watonwan County District Court with second-degree manslaughter and intentional discharge of firearm in connection with the death of Nicholas T. Embertson, 19, of Madelia.

The incident unfolded about 7 a.m. Saturday at Petterson's residence in Fieldon Township, according to the Watonwan County Sheriff's Office.

...

While the law allows for the "justified taking of a life if your life or your family's life is in danger," Nachreiner said Monday, "what we gathered from evidence and statements was that [manslaughter] was the appropriate crime."

Wonder what the story is here? A 65 yo homeowner shoots two teenagers in what is being called a home invasion and this is a crime?

Hopefully the facts will be revealed soon.
The age of those involved is irrelevant.
Without drawing ant conclusions, Byron Smith, who terrorized and shot the two kids burglarizing his house comes to mind.

It was a home invasion call, which means the guy called 911 and that's what he said. There's no facts at all as of yet aside from the charges being filed against him. For that matter, two other sources say it was a 'reckless' discharge, while Stribune says 'intentional'.

Age is relevant simply for the fact that a 65 yo guy isn't likely to be associating with 19 yo kids unless they are his grandkids. So the fact they are at his place is out of the norm and fits with a crime scenario. 19 yo kids often are mixed up with drugs and crime.

If the article said he shot two guys in their 50's I'd be a lot more likely to believe it was people he know and had an argument with (so not justified).

I am looking forward to seeing more facts on this. Until then, I will do my duty as an Internet keyboard warrior and speculate intensely...

The other likely scenario that comes to mind is that this guy was dealing drugs and somehow had a beef with these teens that came to buy from him and then shot them.

Let me see if I can think up anything else to speculate about...

Shooting for the tires. That's probably never a recommended course of action if you're not in the movies. Bummer. Lots of people in this situation were playing stupid games and winning stupid prizes. Sucks for the young ones to have permanent consequences for their misguided choices of youth. Never fun when that happens.

Well, I'm sure the anti's will beat this over our heads for a while.

Need to use a rifle if you are going to shoot out the tires on a moving car.

Maybe for you.
I'd want Joe Biden's shotgun.

Better idea was to take a shot with your cell phone camera.
