Gun Controllers Say They Want 'Reform' but They're Really Pushing Criminalization
The government should loosen laws, reduce conflict between government and the public, and let people defend themselves.
Last week, the House passed a "gun reform" package that's unlikely to pass the Senate. Then, a bipartisan group of senators struck a deal on modest "gun reform" proposals with better prospects. Whatever your take on the merits of these bills, describing legislative proposals for restrictive measures as "reform" is a jarring use of the word—especially after recent national discussions about reducing criminalization as part of a genuine effort to reform the criminal justice system. Real gun reform should involve efforts to minimize conflicts between government enforcers and the public by doing away with intrusive restrictions on people who have done no harm to others.

I have to wonder if the author has just realized that gun control has nothing to do with crime control.

It's quite simple: the "reform" crowd is certain that "common sense" gun laws will reduce crime and violence. When that doesn't happen, they double-down and say that more "reform" is needed. The end of this progression is no legal guns at all, then a decades-long futile effort to control illegal guns. See Prohibition and the War On Drugs.

There are two groups involved. The emotion-driven folks who believe/hope that just another law or two would finally stop bad people from committing violence and the folks with the ultimate agenda of eliminating private gun ownership as a long-term goal. The latter gin up the situations and media coverage to work up the former and gain their support for the stepping stones along the way to the final state.

Except the end of private gun ownership is hardly their final objective.

"Americans like to talk about (or be told about) Democracy but, when put to the test, usually find it to be an 'inconvenience.' We have opted instead for an authoritarian system disguised as a Democracy. We pay through the nose for an enormous joke-of-a-government, let it push us around, and then wonder how all those ******** got in there." ~ Frank Zappa
