Actually, anything that can be perceived as a weapon is prohibited. So you better keep your apple peeler in your lunchbox too when they rob you on your way to your car. They will probably tell us to call for an escort by Fairview security if we feel unsafe. Half of our security pukes can't make it all the way to the employee parking ramp, the other half are either emo kids or commie pinkos with dreadlocks and bolts in their face. One exception is a native American guy who is one of the friendliest people you can meet but he looks like he can squeeze the life out of you with two fingers. I bet he's gonna be busy the next couple of days.
I have a Colt Python and you don't so what do I care...

On Monday, January 25 shortly after 11:00 p.m. two female
University of Minnesota students were walking on a sidewalk outside
of Moos Tower on the East Bank when two males approached them. One
of the males grabbed one of the victim's coats to stop her and the
suspects demanded backpacks and cell phones from the victims. The
victims believe both were armed with handguns. After the robbery
the suspects fled the scene, apparently towards Centennial Hall.

Shortly thereafter, a 19 year-old male University of Minnesota
student was walking on the sidewalk in front of the Centennial
Hall, which is within a block of Moos Tower, when he heard someone
behind him make a comment. The victim turned towards what turned
out to be two male suspects and he was suddenly shot once in the
chest without provocation by one of the suspects. No valuables were
demanded or obtained by the suspects. The two suspects fled the
scene on foot and the victim entered the lobby of Centennial Hall
where he obtained assistance from staff and responding emergency
personnel. The victim was transported to HCMC where he underwent
surgery for the gunshot wound and is expected to survive.

The descriptions of the suspects in the two incidents are very
similar and are as follows:

The first suspect is described as a light skinned black male,
between 18 and 20 years of age, approximately five feet, seven
inches tall with a light build and acne scars on his face. The
suspect was wearing a black puffy winter jacket, black pants and a
stocking cap. The suspect was armed with a handgun.

The second suspect is described as a light skinned black male,
between 18 and 20 years of age, approximately five feet eight
inches tall with a light build. The suspect was wearing a black
jacket. The suspect may have been armed with a handgun.

The University of Minnesota Police Department is investigating
these crimes, along with the assistance of the Hennepin County
Sheriff's Office Crime Lab Unit. Anyone with information about the
incidents is asked to contact University Police at 612-624-COPS
(2677) or 612-626-TIPS (8477).

In addition, the Minneapolis Police Department is investigating the
off-campus robbery of a female University of Minnesota student that
may be related to the incidents listed above. The robbery occurred
just before 11:00 p.m. in the 500 block of Huron Boulevard SE,
which is just a few blocks from where the on-campus incidents
occurred. The victim was also robbed by two males who have a
similar description of the suspects in the incidents above and at
least one of them was armed with a handgun. The UMPD will work with
Minneapolis Police investigators to compare the incidents and
investigate them appropriately if they are in-fact related.

The University of Minnesota Police Department asks that you
remember the following:
o When threatened with a weapon, it's best not to resist. Your
personal safety is more important than a lost wallet or cell phone.
o Always be aware of your surroundings.
o Walk in well lit areas and don't walk alone. If you can't find
someone to walk with, call the Campus Escort service at
612-624-WALK for a free security escort.
o Carry minimal amounts of valuables.
o Keep written records of valuables, including model and serial
numbers, in a safe place.
o Call 911 immediately if you are the victim or witness to a crime.
o Document information about the suspect for police (i.e. clothing
descriptions, facial features, piercings or tattoos, speech, etc.).

This Crime Alert is sent in compliance with the federal Clery Act
which requires universities to alert the campus community of crimes
that may pose an ongoing threat to students and employees. For
updates on any developments in this case, please visit the Crime
Alerts page on the UMPD website.

For more on campus safety and security, and for a list of campus
safety resources available to you, visit the University's Emergency
Preparedness Web site.

Dear member of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus community:

Our entire community was deeply dismayed and saddened today to hear the news about the violent crime that touched the lives of several of our students late last night.

First and foremost, I'm asking each of you to keep the young man who is in the hospital, and his family and friends, in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers. We're grateful for the quick response of people nearby, whose actions helped the victim get to the hospital quickly.

U of M Police Chief Greg Hestness sent out a crime alert earlier today, asking for your assistance in providing information that will lead to the apprehension of those who perpetrated this crime and who are suspected of other criminal activities last night. We urgently need your help.

Please be aware and do not hesitate to report any suspicious or alarming activity. Also, remember to take advantage of the many resources we offer to support you in times of high anxiety and to help you remain safe:

* Mental Health Counseling - Students can visit the student mental health site to learn about the range of counseling services available. Faculty and staff have access to our Employee Assistance Program.
* Security Monitors and Escorts - UMPD offers free walking and biking security monitors to, from, and around campus. More information is available here.
* Other Public Safety Resources - The University's Emergency Preparedness Web site has additional resources about campus and personal safety, including how to access the MSA Express and Washington Avenue Bridge Circulator. Please take a moment to learn a few simple steps you can take to help keep yourself and your friends safe.

Acts of violent crime are always unsettling. We're fortunate to have a relatively low crime rate, especially for an urban campus, but statistics are rarely comforting when members of our community are the victims of crime. Rest assured that the University takes public safety very seriously. In recent years, we've increased the size of our police force and increased digital surveillance, with 1,800 cameras around campus. Through continued persistence, investment, and community awareness, we will provide a safe environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

Thank you for your help and concern.

Sincerely,

Robert H. Bruininks

This was about 1 block west of my house and it sounds like their escape route was directly past my house...awesome.

I would also like to point out that security monitors/walking escorts have a big-effen-radio, so obviously they are a match for 2 guys with guns.

Yep, for the BG's.....a gun free zone is a target rich environment......
but you too can be free from violence if you only are smart enough to remember
the twelve or was it fifteen steps you need to remember to get to the "Other Public Safety Resources",
along with the 5 phone numbers............... :hammer:

MN Daily Article

A University of Minnesota student was shot outside of Centennial Hall late Monday night.

The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The shooting was one of three incidents in the area overnight, University Police Chief Greg Hestness said in a crime alert sent out Tuesday.

Around 11 p.m., two suspects approached two female students outside Moos Tower and tried to rob them.

Shortly after, the suspects approached and suddenly shot the 19-year-old first-year student outside Centennial Hall. The student underwent surgery at HCMC and is expected to survive.

A third incident, a robbery of a female student on the 500 block of Huron Avenue, could be connected to the shooting, according to the crime alert.

Nick Furey, first year Spanish, international business and entrepreneurial management major, was entering the Centennial Hall lobby at the time of the shooting.

Furey said he and the victim were at the Rec Center at the same time, but the victim left a few minutes before he did.

Furey jogged to Centennial hall and passed the victim along the way he said. As he entered the dorm, Furey said he heard three shots, but dismissed them as fireworks.

While waiting for the elevator in the Centennial hall lobby, Furey was approached by the victim.

“The kid walks up to me probably 20 seconds after I heard the gunshots and he looks at me with this blank face,” Furey said. “He pulls up his shirt and he goes ‘I think I got shot’ and he’s just spewing blood from his stomach.”

Furey said he and others called 911 and assisted the victim until emergency responders arrived about five minutes later.

Multiple residents identified the victim as a University student who lived in Centennial Hall.

Max Johnson, a University sophomore, said he and two friends were walking home from Dinnaken Properties at the time of the shooting.

After he heard the shots, Johnson said he saw two men running through the middle of the Super Block. One appeared to be holding a duffel bag.

No arrests have been made at this time, but the crime alert identified the suspects as both being black males between 18 and 20 years old. Both suspects are described as being about 5 feet 8 inches tall, with light builds. One has acne scars on his face. The Daily is withholding the student’s name out of respect for his family members.

Hestness and University administration have scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference today. Check mndaily.com for more details.

This kind of $hit has been going on for a while, but have been baseball bat attacks on students and even some armed robberies. The U of M police dept does it's best to keep it quiet and often refers to "mpls police are looking for" in their reports to the public. They often leave out the race of the perp's. I went on the U of M police website last summer after a student was seriously beaten with a bat, and there were no crime alerts listed; they want to keep their stats good so parents won't be afarid to send their kids to school here.
