Marines not welcome in Berkeley

Postby tt3 on Fri Feb 01, 2008 3:10 pm

I saw this posted on another forum and saw no mention of it here. Since so many of you have served, I thought you might find it interesting.

Hey-hey, ho-ho, the Marines in Berkeley have got to go.

That's the message from the Berkeley City Council, which voted 6-3 Tuesday night to tell the U.S. Marines that its Shattuck Avenue recruiting station "is not welcome in the city, and if recruiters choose to stay, they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders."

In addition, the council voted to explore enforcing its law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation against the Marines because of the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. And it officially encouraged the women's peace group Code Pink to impede the work of the Marines in the city by protesting in front of the station...

It is unfortunate that Berkeley isn't a more liberal town. You hate to see a place so burdened with intolerance, hatred, bigotry, and discrimination......

I caught something on the Phil Hendrie show on the way home from work about this the other night. He was interviewing a vegan husband of one of the Code Pink protesters. He was so femmy, I think it was a bit. If he posts it on his website, I'll put the link on here.

All of Phil Hendries stuff is make-believe, and an act.............rather like Berkely, they live in make-believe and are a bunch of the biggest whiney assed, ooh I'm so androgenous, anti-american, spineless, wimpering, Estrogen permeated, social deviant ball sacks in the US of A, well except for San Francisco, Boston and a few other places.......what is sad for them, cause they don't realize it, is that if they got into serous trouble that the Marines would be the first to line up to help them, and the first to die to protect them............... :hartman:

if they got into serious trouble that the Marines would be the first to line up to help them, and the first to die to protect them...............even though they are a bunch of the biggest whiney assed, androgenous, anti-american, spineless, wimpering, Estrogen permeated, social deviant ball sacks.
Sorry, had to take a little liberty with the wording to make it appropriate.:salute:

Oh! Well, this character was a hilarious caricature of a local resident then.

Years ago, when I lived in California, I would go to Berkeley occasionally. Best collection of bookstores I had ever seen. I remember when Berkeley was a marketplace of ideas. One could walk through campus and see tables set up by all sorts of organizations. I am sorry that they have, in their infinitesimal wisdom, decided to limit their marketplace to ideas with which they agree. I am not so offended that the Berkeley City Council doesn't care for the Marines, but to be openly hostile to them is, to me, very offensive. In a country where freedom of expression is allegedly valued, that freedom includes expression of ideas with which I disagree.

I never minded that Cal Berkeley had two separate, and mutually hostile, Communist Parties on campus in the 60s. If people want to believe in that crap, hey--that's the right freedom gives you. However, to tell any group--Marines, Communists, gays, vegetarians, Buddhists, etc.--that they are not welcome because of their ideas--sorry, Charlie. That's where my blood pressure rises.

Recruiters are not welcome but I am willing to bet that an islamist group burning American flags and shouting anti-bush slogans would probably be welcomed and probably admired for their willingness to exercise their rights to free speech and assembly.

California in general is beyond words. They have in some real sense returned the "California Republic" back to Mexico.

A book was written in 1975 by Ernest Callenbach called Ecotopia about just that subject. Pretty much of the west coast of the US secceded from the union and became the country of Ecotopia. It was run under a lot of the principles we see in Berkley. There was very little dissent, everyone seemed to be in agreement on the economic and ecological ideas. There was no mention of the Mexican influence, however. Maybe the time has come for them to start their own country for real.
