Rosaries banned at Coon Rapids High School

I am in a bad mood, and this made it worse: http://www.kare11.com/news/article/9786 ... ota-school

Would rainbows be banned if gangs used them?

The appropriate response by the school would have been to explain to the student why they have a concern over him wearing the rosary (it has been adopted by one or more gangs, and we don't want you to be targeted mistakenly), then let him make the choice to wear it or not with full knowledge of why what he is doing could be potentially dangerous.

If the student decides to continue to wear it, an additional (overboard I think, given the student's age and ability to comprehend these things, but not inappropriate) would have been to contact his parents and express their concerns to them as well, since he is still a minor.

Beyond that, the school / government has no place trying to protect us from ourselves. Why the folks in charge can't figure this out is beyond me...

Anti-Catholicism, the last remaining accepted prejudice. I find it sickening that in Minneapolis we had to pay to install foot sinks for the Somali students and ten miles away we've got a district that bans the wearing of the Rosary.

Yet another good reason all education should be private: schools would be much more concerned with the parents' opinions if the money actually followed the students, rather than just being taken by coercion and used to fund "public" (sic) eduction.

School uniforms or a dress code would be one solution.

Is it any wonder we send our kids to private school? Not only that, but private Catholic *gasp* school! Our neighbor's 16year old goes to CRHS and she says there's some hallways ya just don't walk down.

I can't wait til my girls are old enough to attend. :?

Is the rosary meant to be worn? Grew up catholic and never new anyone to wear it. Pray it, but never seen is actually worn. Anybody know the protocol on this?

I guess where I am going is that while it is easy to assume that this is a move to outlaw catholosim, but it could be just as plausible that this is a smart alec kid who is purposly doing something in order to get under the skin of some administrators. I am sorry, but as the parent of teenage boys, IMO they are always guilty until proven innocent and I have yet to see one be proven innocent.

I really doubt that he does not know it is a gang symbol and while media loves a good trolling story to get us amped up, teenagers love to push buttons even more so.

My locker was searched for drugs in grade school and they confiscated a metal clipboard saying it could be used as a weapon. Obviously they knew more about the tactical uses of clipboards than I did at that young age.

I think that Venus alignment might be causing weird things. I thought this would be a perfect thread to troll, but I'm actually in agreement with what most are saying, except the getting rid of public school bit. But seems like jgalt's idea of explaining to the student why it might be a bad idea, but letting them decide. Seems like a violation of that students rights. I'm all for not forcing kids to say the pledge and refer to god, etc... but banning religious emblems is a bad move.

Student rights? Ban fricken everything. They should go to school without clothes. If they want to disagree they can be spanked by a metal clipboard. Corporal punishment is the solution.

I carry my Rosary in my pocket and have for years. Often you will see religious carry their Rosary from their belt. Have never seen anyone carry it around his neck...

I was doing a bit of looking and it appears, though I am not an expert, that if you are wearing it as a sign of devotion you are ok to do so however if it is for a vain reason (a fashion statement) then not. So like anything only God can judge I suppose...
