For something that was begun before Obama took office, what's he protecting? Or, maybe rather, who?

To my knowledge, the Bush program & 0bama program were not the same. The program under the Bush admin was a coordinated effort with the Mexican government to stop gun trafficking at the border, using electronic surveillance & other intelligence. Yes, they lost 300-400 guns, but that certainly was not their intended goal.
The 0bama program was operating without the knowledge or coordinated effort of the Mexican government. Their goal was to simply flood Mexico with as many guns from the US as possible. They never had any intentions to track them. They purposely wanted the guns to show up at crime scenes on both sides of the border so that they could push their own agenda for stricter 'gun control'. Hundreds of Mexicans, as well as at least two Americans died because of their actions & desire to usurp our 2nd amendment rights.

It would seem to me that the leader of the Executive branch ought be leading the charge against this abuse; not 'asserting executive privilege'...

...though I've read the gist of the info at that link from multiple sources, so I have no trouble believing what Tromix wrote to be true.
