The suspect in the shooting of Cold Spring police officer Tom Decker was released by Stearns County authorities Tuesday, Dec. 4.

No charges were filed.

Held in the Stearns County jail since late Thursday on suspicion of murder, Ryan Michael Larson, 34, was released from custody late Tuesday morning. But officials say the investigation is active and ongoing, and assisting agencies, including the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, will continue to exhaustively pursue all leads.

"Investigators will not rest until we fully determine what happened the night of Officer Decker's death and bring to account those responsible," said Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Assistant Superintendent Drew Evans.

In a statement, authorities said there was not sufficient documented evidence to continue holding Larson.

Something tells me this guy is going to have 24x7 company wherever he goes.

Suspect in killing of Cold Springs officer released...

Postby Snowgun on Tue Dec 04, 2012 12:54 pm

I had a feeling this would happen. Makes you wonder what they had on him other than he lived in the area and he had some guns.

What happened to the partner of the cop? Wasn't he there?

I am guessing the lack of the murder weapon is the single biggest reason the suspect is free?

In this guilty until proven innocent world... I'm starting to think having one very rare gun at home is better than having a variety... had he owned a 20 gauge he'd be screwed. That's it, I'm buying some off the wall gun that fires a round that's next to impossible to find.

While life doesn't exactly resemble CSI, I can assure you that a lot more goes into an investigation than that.

OK, how about 'more screwed that he was' then?

If he did it, he sure kept his mouth shut.

It's not unfathomable to think that this guy might not have murdered Officer Decker. The details released to the public are still somewhat sketchy, and come to think of it, how many times have descriptions of an event been "officially released" only to be amended later? Despite this horrible tragedy, or perhaps because of it, I'm glad we have an "innocent until proven guilty" system of justice. I hope, as we all do, that they find the person(s) responsible and lock him/her/them up for life. If this guy did it, what's a few more months out on the street? Better that than to rush to trial without a complete case.
