Contrary to popular belief, guns are not illegal in France. Rifles, pistols & Shoguns are freely available, providing you have the license for them. There is a substantial hunting and sporting population, IPSC, IDPA, SASS, Bullseye and PPC community too.

Yes, firearms are quite legal in France and other European countries (note: Great Britain does not consider itself part of Europe) If I had wanted, I could have purchased a fully functioning "antique" weapon in Bastogne, a weapon we know as the .30cal M-1919 machine gun for about $1,500 American. Problem was, I knew couldn't get it home. On the same trip, I ran across a beautiful US Army BAR in a French militaria flea market behind Omaha Beach, fully functioning, ready to rip, for about $1,200 American. That was 2004.

Ten years, $10,000 for possession of either here.

Any Frenchman or Belgian could and many do own these and other WWII weapons as part of their collections. I don't believe they need to be registered either.......

Which is exactly why the arguments for banning weapons are ill conceived! If ready access to weapons (especially such extra deadly military weapons!) are the root cause of violence, and such weapons are legal in France but not in the U.S., why does there exist such a large gulf between violent deaths in our countries? Could it in fact be not because of weapons but instead because of culture and social policy? Hmmm... Smells like logic. Quick, someone hijack this thread, before we start making more sense!
