I don't honestly trust a lot of the information that was making the rounds just after this first happened, way too much emotion/horror involved and people clamoring for anything that could get them an early scoop and very little solid factual information. Just because something was reported initially does not mean it was ever true, interview witnesses to a crime or accident and you'll experience the same chaos of information mixed with speculation, imagination and often contradictory "facts" from different people who watched something horrible and shocking happen.
The article lays out some evidence involved though they could have done a better job grouping relevant facts (yes, I do think they called out some of the "gun" specific elements separately on purpose, but this is NBC so I expect nothing less). In addition to the NRA Pistol book they also cited finding "an article from The New York Times about a 2008 school shooting at Northern Illinois University and three photographs of what appeared to be a dead person covered with plastic and blood. Other books included “Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger’s” and “Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Mind of an Autistic Savant.”
